Artists Invited to Enter the 2012 Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest

Artists Invited to Enter the 2012 Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest

Alabama artists are invited to enter the 2012 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp art contest, which opens January 1, 2012. The winning artwork will be used as the design of the 2013-2014 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp, which is required to be purchased when hunting migratory waterfowl. Entries will be accepted from Jan. 1 - Feb. 15, 2012. The competition is open to resident Alabama artists only.

All eligible entries will be on display February 24, 2012, at the Richard Beard Building, 1445 Federal Dr., Montgomery, Ala., 36107. Following the showing, three judges from the fields of art, ornithology and wildlife conservation will select the winning waterfowl art.

“Like the federal waterfowl stamp, revenues from the sale of Alabama stamps are used to procure, establish or improve migratory waterfowl habitat,” said N. Gunter Guy, Jr., Conservation Commissioner. “We encourage all Alabama artists to participate in this unique contest.”

Only original horizontal artworks depicting a species of North American migratory duck or goose will be eligible. The pintail, American wigeon, and the ringed-neck duck -- depicted in the winning artwork of three previous year’s contests -- are not eligible as the subject for the 2013-2014 stamp. A pair of ringed-neck ducks painted by Jim Denney of Alexander City, Ala., won the 2011 contest.

The judging criteria will emphasize uncluttered design suitable for printing as a stamp, anatomical accuracy of the illustrated species, and artistic rendering. Close attention must be given to tone and detail, since those aspects are prerequisites for printing artwork as a stamp. Wing and feather construction must be particularly well defined. Entries may be drawn or painted in any medium. Entries cannot exceed 9 by 12 inches (15 by 18 inches matted).

For contest information and entry forms visit the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website, www.outdooralabama.com, or contact contest coordinator David Hayden, at 334-242-3469.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Parks, State Lands, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival Announces Call for Entries for 2012 Alabama Farmers Co-op Photo Contest

Moulton, Alabama – Amateur photographers are invited to submit photographs of agricultural interest for the Alabama Farmers Co-op 2012 Photo Contest. Sponsored by Alabama Farmers Co-op (AFC), the contest is held in conjunction with the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival set for April 13-15, 2012 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton.

Photos must be related to agriculture from any location within the state of Alabama. The competition is divided into four themed categories: Life on the Farm, Livestock, Crops and Agriculture Families. Only 8”x10” color photos will be accepted and entries using a portrait format will be considered for use on the cover of Farming News, a publication of the AFC.

Prizes are awarded for each category with $125 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. In addition, each participant receives 2 free tickets to the 2012 Alabama Chicken & Egg Festival and all entries will be on display during the three day event.

“The Alabama Farmers Co-op is excited to partner with the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival to offer people of all ages a chance to show what they love most about farming in Alabama,” said Jim Allen, AFC’s director of advertising and public relations. “Previous contests have attracted a variety of wholesome images, each one telling a different story while reflecting the Co-op’s core beliefs of hard work, honesty, and family, and with this year’s contest, we are searching for that one entry that truly captures the essence of farm life in Alabama for the cover of Farming News.”

The state of Alabama is filled with opportunities to capture special moments on the farm

Shortly after marrying my husband in 2006, a Huntsville native who shared his love of the city with me, I began painting Huntsville scenery. The first subject I chose was the Kaffeeklatsch because I found their sign and storefront charming - and I still do. I have done several more paintings of them since then. Searching for subjects to paint in Huntsville has also changed the way I see my own hometown in the Mie Prefecture of Japan. When I returned to Japan for a visit this year it was during the rainy season. As I was hiking an historic trail in the area, I was inspired by the fog and mist rolling through the trees and have been working on a series of paintings featuring what I saw there.

I was raised in a military family where I had the privilege of traveling to various parts of the world. This instilled in me, at an early age, a true love and appreciation for the beauty of the world we live in. This can easily be seen in my work as I enjoy painting places I have visited.

My first artistic endeavor involved music. I have played the piano since age 9, taught piano lessons, worked as an Elementary Music Teacher, and played piano and organ on staff at several churches in Alabama. I also play the flute and enjoys singing alto.

Several years ago I took a couple of oil painting classes with my mother. It was at this time that I discovered my love for painting and art. Over 4 years ago I was involved in a car accident in which I received a head injury and had to have 3 neck surgeries. I feared that I would not be able to paint anymore due to nerve damage and for over 4 years did not even try. A few months ago I picked my paint brush up again and started painting and have not put it down since then. My accident has given me a greater compassion for people, life, and the beauty around me. When I look at art, it speaks to me. Art is some of the best therapy there is. It says things to me I may not be able to verbally express at that moment.

I paint in oils and acrylics and also enjoys making jewelry. I currently reside in Huntsville, AL.
