Huntsville Museum of Art's 2012 Board of Directors

The Huntsville Museum of Art recently announced its 2012 board of directors, as the Museum's new fiscal year began October 1, 2011.

2012 board officers include Sarah Gessler, chairman; John Wynn, vice chairman; Richard Crunkleton, secretary; and Patsy Haws, treasurer. Also on the board are Middie Thompson, Joyce Griffin, Herman Stubbs, Dr. Oscar Maxwell, newcomer Walter A. "Tod" Dodgen, Virginia Rice, Charlie Bonner, Betsy Lowe, and Dorothy Davidson.

Ex-officio members of the board include Museum Executive Director Christopher J. Madkour, Foundation President Dane Block, Women's Guild President Debbie Washburn, and Art Krewe President Houston Matthews.

The Huntsville Museum of Art also recognized its outgoing board chairman, Middie Thompson, for her service and tremendous contributions. Thompson played an integral role in the Museum's capital campaign and expansion and led the executive director search committee.

After 18 years of dedicated service, board member John Irby stepped off of the Museum board. Irby, a former board chairman himself, was instrumental in not only the recent Museum expansion of 21,000 additional square feet, but was also an integral part of the Huntsville Museum of Art's move from the Von Braun Center into the new facility on Church Street in early 1999.

Huntsville Times Art Exhibit: Artist, Caroline Wang

Final Mission of Space Shuttle by Caroline Wang, copyright

     Huntsville Times Art Exhibit
Artist: Caroline Wang
       Theme: “2011 inspiration”
 October, 2011

Featuring Huntsville artist Caroline Wang, This exhibit displays original paintings inspired by Caroline’s life in 2011. Caroline says that writers use writing to express their feelings, but Artists use paintings to express their feelings. Caroline composes her paintings from her inspirations. Caroline shares her experiences and her feelings in her paintings. There were many things happened during the year of 2011. Caroline has traveled several exciting places which included Taipei, Hong Kong, and Limerick Ireland. She also experienced the winter blizzard days, Tornado power outage days in Huntsville AL. But the most memorial experience was watching the “Final Mission of Space Shuttle” launch on July 8th. Caroline Wang works for NASA and she had the privilege to work on the first Shuttle program STS-1 on Space Shuttle Main Engine Controller software and simulation software and also worked on the last Shuttle program STS-135 on SSME Software Assurance. Although she spent many years on other projects, but she felt that she has been intimately involved in Space Shuttle program. STS-135 launch was scheduled for July 8th but the weather forecast showed heavy rain and T-storm and it was 70% no go. One million people traveled to Cape Canaveral and traffic on the Bee-line high way from Orlando to Cape Canaveral was bumper to bumper. Caroline’s daughter Emily and her boy friend Andy also traveled from San Francisco for the event. The sky was gray for the whole time, but 10 minutes before launch target time, the sky opened a beautiful blue tunnel, just enough time for the Shuttle to go through. Many people cried and thank God’s blessing. It was a very emotional moment. Caroline captured that moment of inspiration, and created a painting name “Final Mission of Space Shuttle” in memory of the mission.

Caroline is a diverse artists. She incorporates Asian cultural into Western art and paints what ever subject inspires her. She experiments with different types of materials for her artwork.. Her original paintings have been on exhibition throughout many of cities within Southeastern United States. Since 2004, she has selected a theme for her annual art exhibits. This allows her to focus on specific subjects. Her themes throughout the years have included “East meets West”, “A new look for Asian Art’, “Expressions,”, “Tour around the World”, “Species around Us”, “Dramatic Gardens” and “2011 inspiration”.

As an artist, I am a beginner learning about visual balance. Some of my paintings look abstract; but while I admire abstract paintings, my work is representational. I enjoy translating the things I see in the physical world, putting them down on the restricted, flat space of a canvas. It's a challenge to produce anything that is as pleasing as the original experience of seeing the world.

I use acrylics and look forward to trying other types of paint. I have been painting for less than two years, but I spent years thinking about what I want to paint. Now, thanks to God, I have the space and time to begin experimenting. Subjects that are compelling to me not only have nice lines, they are icons commonly used or commonly recognized in American culture. I like to create interesting contrasts between linear, industrial-type subject matter and soft, flowing media (paints, fabric).

Eva Ziegler, Jewelry Maker

In 2004, I graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Art Education, Museums and Cultural Institutions. In 2005, I began working at Caleb Meyer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where I became the in-house pearl and bead stringer. There, I was given the opportunity to learn about precious gems, pearls and skilled craftsmanship. In 2006, I received my Pearl Stringing certificate from the reputable Gemological Institute of America. I found the centuries-old craft of pearl stringing so appealing that I went on to receive a GIA Pearls Course certificate in 2008. Since then, I decided to begin selling my own creations. I am excited to offer designs consisting of naturally colored precious beads and pearls. My work is currently for sale at Caleb Meyer, in Philadelphia, Grogan Jewelers, in Huntsville, the Huntsville Art Museum, and my website, http://www.evaziegler.com/

If I had to describe a quality that applies to the art that I like best, I’d use the word poetic. What do I mean by poetic? The dictionary defines it as “having an imaginative or sensitively emotional style of expression” and that’s a fine beginning. However I also see it as a juxtaposition of economy and extravagance. Information, both visual and metaphorical, is reduced to only what is needed in order to open the work for interpretation. Along with this economy, however, the artist must imbue the work with richness and intensity. This can be performed with an explosion of ornamentation, form, marks, materials or even emptiness. The key is both revelation and mystery, an authenticity not burdened with elucidation. The desire to create this quality of expression imbues all of my studio production and serves my conceptual concerns. I am interested in exploring people’s wounds and desires and how those things shape individual personalities and relationships with others and the world. I am interested in the perverse and the redemptive, the forlorn and the transcendent; the way that each person’s life is at once a comedy and a tragedy. I explore these issues through ideas about the body, language and narrative.

My visual sources have expanded and evolved as I explore these ideas throughout various bodies of work. Initially, the illustrations from medical and nursing texts were my primary sources. The most recent addition to my stockpile of visual references are photos and sketches of various “antiquities” collected from in both the British museum, the Louvre, Musee National des Arts et MĂ©tiers and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These objects hold a beauty intrinsic to the things themselves—outside of use or historical value. They are emblematic of desire and often suggest archetypal characters and forms. Further more, my study of these objects contained an overarching sense that “a person made these” and that there was something about this making that was also about being in the world.

My time in the studio is a time for me to consider questions about what it is to be human. How do forces of denial, interruption, indulgence or transcendence shape us? Our psyches are in turn vulnerable, resilient, and transcendent. The uncompromising temporality of our existence is terrible and grand; we struggle to invent ourselves. When we pause for breath or reel with the blows there are moments of something like clarity in that bright and painful moment beauty emerges.
