Huntsville Art League Wants YOU!
Dear Artist:
Huntsville Art League has been the “home Gallery” for the vast majority of Tennessee Valley artists for the last 54 years. We would like to extend to you a personal invitation to become a regular Exhibitor at Huntsville Art League.
Huntsville Art League is a not-for-profit, “co-op” Gallery. It is a Gallery of the artist, by the artist, and for the artist. It is a cooperative effort of 60+ Tennessee Valley artists. We also offer classes and workshops for up and coming artists. We are here to nurture and grow and display local artists, some of who go on to hang in commercial Galleries. Our artists have been collected nationally and internationally, and have won awards and honors of every kind. We regularly advertise the accomplishments of Huntsville Art League artists in our newsletter and website, and in other media outlets including newspaper, Social Media, radio, and TV.
We offer exposure for our Exhibitors in many venues; not just our own Gallery. We are the official “booking agent” for the Huntsville Times gallery, and the Heritage Club. We display our art in the Conference room of the downtown Library, and the historic Regions bank on the square. We also put on shows at local Malls, host a Huntsville Art League tent at Panoply, and participate in the citywide “Gallery Tour”, twice a year. Every month, we feature a different artist in our “Limelight” area. We produce an annual juried show called “Unique Views”, open to all Tennessee Valley artists. Our annual fund-raiser, Collector’s Draw is always a sellout. Our newest venue, Gallery on the Square, is a 2000 square foot Gallery across from the courthouse, downtown, where we host another monthly reception. We also have 2000 square feet of Studio space, available for rent, at the Gallery.
But, you have to be an Exhibitor to participate! What’s the “cost” to you? Well, you will have to present 5 pieces of your work for review. You will have to pay a small fee ($20) per month (which defrays our rent), and as a “co-operative” artist, you are expected to “man” the sales desk for one 3.5 hour shift per month. That’s it!
You will be provided with space to display your work for sale, and are invited to join our monthly Receptions, which are there to bring out art enthusiasts. Hundreds of people visit us at Gallery Tour as well.
Please take a minute to check out our Exhibitor Application (attached). We look forward to hearing from you!! mail@HuntsvilleArtLeague.org (Please contact the Walt for the Exhibitor Application)
Sincerely,
Walt Schumacher

Plein Air Paint Out, September 11, 2011 Burritt Museum
Art News from Sara Beth Fair:
Plein Air Paint Out, September 11, 2011 Burritt Museum
Burritt Museum was the Alabama host for the Oil Painters of America 7th Annual Great American Paint Out on Sunday, September 11, 2011. The ringing of the church bells at the museum started off the event in memory of those who lost their lives in the September 11th tragedy 10 years prior. Twenty six artists attended the 12:00 – 5:30 event and came from all over Alabama, with two even from as far away as Meridian, Mississippi. The atmosphere showed us all its creativity and beauty changing from sunshine, to clouds, to a few raindrops and finishing with a glorious sunset all in one afternoon. It was spectacular and touching to see so many fellow artists seeking to paint their voice of what they beheld.
The Burritt treated the artist to lovely refreshments of mint tea and scones in the Southern tradition, mid afternoon under the awning of the mansion. It was there that our group, Plein Air North Alabama, was born.
The Friday following the event, an art show to showcase the paintings was held at sunset in the mansion, “Masterpieces and Merlot.” Over 200 tickets were sold to the event. Several paintings were purchased and all were viewed by many. Many thanks to the Oil Painters of America for initiating this event, to Plein Air Magazine’s Krystal Allen for her encouragement, to the artists in attendance and especially to the staff of the Burritt for all of their generosity and support!

Tennessee Valley Museum of Art in Tuscumbia will exhibit works by Kentucky artist Steve Armstrong
TUSCUMBIA, ALABAMA … The Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia, will exhibit works by Kentucky artist Steve Armstrong, who creates sculpture that moves.
“Automata: The Mechanical Sculpture of Steve Armstrong” will be at the museum from Sunday, Sept. 18 to Friday, Nov. 4. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays-Fridays and 1-3 p.m., Sundays. Admission is $5 adults, $3 children, free for museum members and free on Sundays, with group rates available.
The artist will be at the show’s free opening reception, 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. He will present a gallery talk at 2 p.m., and visitors can meet him and ask questions.
Armstrong carves and articulates human and animal figures and then places them in sculptural settings, adding hand-carved wooden mechanisms -- such as cranks, gears, levers and pulleys – that let viewers bring the piece to life.
“This interaction with the viewer is an indispensable part of my work,” he said. “The fact that the mechanisms are handmade and often primitive is intended as commentary on our culture's obsession with technology, and this is echoed in the typically dark humor of the subject matter.”
It’s through combining the carved wood elements with the color, surface and patina of each work that he comments on “the impermanence, absurdity, and beauty of life,” Armstrong added.
He’s inspired by travel, American folk art, European clockwork figures and artist Jean Tinguely’s abstract kinetic constructions, among other influences.
Armstrong studied art at the University of Kentucky and returned to art fulltime after retiring from almost 20 years in education. He has had numerous exhibitions, has won several awards and sells his work in galleries in Kentucky and California.
For more information, contact Keith McMurtrey at 256.383.0533 or visit tvaa.net.

Monte Sano Art Show to celebrate 13 years Saturday at annual event
By Sarah Cure, The Huntsville Times The Huntsville Times 9/12/2011
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Make room hikers, disc golfers and campers.
More than 150 artists and craftsmen from across the nation will convene at Monte Sano State Park on Saturday for the 13th annual Monte Sano Art Show.
Held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the free event will feature a wide array of mediums ranging from ceramics to woodworking and jewelry making to paintings. It will also include this year’s featured artists – Susie Garrett, Steve Loucks, Lynnette Hesser, Kathy McElroy and Dr. Clifton Pearson.
Event organizer Lori Connors says the Monte Sano Art Show – which has grown significantly from its early beginnings in 1998 – attracts crowds anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000.
“Our goal for this year is to basically have a successful show,” Connors said. “There’s a lot of buyers that follow certain artists and there’s a lot of really neat stuff you might not find anywhere else.”
The Monte Sano Art Show was founded by artist and art instructor Debra Simpson who wanted to give her students an opportunity to exhibit their art work in a supportive, nurturing environment, Connors said.
“It just grew from there,” she said. “It’s a real attractive location with the scenic overlook and we have the support of the state park and the Monte Sano community.”
Although the art show is free to attend and open to the public, visitors must pay $5 for parking and the park’s entrance fee. The event not only serves as an opportunity for consumers to support local artists and the arts community, but will also feature live music, food and beverage vendors and free wi-fi.

Sunday, September 11, 12:00 – 6:00 (Rain date Monday Sept 12, 1:00-7:00)
Open to all artists, Any Level, Any Medium
Free Burritt member/ $8 nonmember
We are one week away from the Paint Out. We have over 25 artists already committed from as far as Mississippi and it is our hope that many more will join us. Remember, this is meant to be a fun day of artists gathering, encouraging, and enjoying the beauty of being outdoors "working." Feel free to stay all or part of the time. We know that all will have heavy hearts in remembrance of the tragic events 10 years ago and we are certain that these emotions will be present in much of the work that day.

Artist chooses own battlefield in fight against breast cancer
By Holly Hollman
HUNTSVILLE — Artist Anna Braden of Huntsville could not fathom what the length of her foot had to do with the battle against breast cancer.
She chose to ignore a Facebook challenge she saw in August asking her to put her foot length in inches on her status as a means of raising awareness.
In frustration, she picked up her own weapon, a paint brush, and chose her own battlefield, a bra from her underwear drawer, and she started her own fight.
On one cup, she painted a sun and pink breast cancer awareness ribbons. On the second cup, she painted cows with udders, the moon and stars. She stared at her brassiere canvas and had an idea.
She got on Facebook and asked, “Does anybody want to join me in painting bras?”
The response has been phenomenal.
The result was The Painted Bra Art Project. Women and men worldwide are painting bras, what Braden likes to call brasterpieces, to sell in her Facebook auction in October to raise money for the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. She will have the original bra on display in Athens this weekend during the Art on the Square Festival.
“I thought this would be a local thing,” Braden said. “I held a Facebook auction for artwork to raise money for tornado relief, and we raised $6,300 for the Red Cross. I thought this would be on the same scale, but it has grown bigger than I could have imagined.”
Bra painting parties have cropped up nationwide, and actresses such as Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston have liked or referred to the project site on their Facebook pages.

Featured Artist: Drop Metal
Drop Metal was started by two designers who were determined to find a way to walk the line between art and product design. Drawn together by overlapping creative fields, our goal is to reveal the true relationship with a product when quality is valued over quantity.
When large sections of metal are cut, the leftover material that falls to the floor is commonly referred to as "drop metal". This is our medium, and the source of our name. We strive to use scrap and recycled products as much as possible.
We are constantly pushing ourselves to try new things, so we encourage custom orders to keep us on our toes. With metal, the possibilities are endless; we look forward to discovering them.

The beauty of vertical spaces with hints of unexpected color is the driving force behind my mixed media works of art. I lay down layers of paint on tarpaper and then cuts back into the surface forming unexpected organic lines. Then I apply wax and rub it with an oil based glaze to create texture.
Whether is it the music that plays while I paint, the subject matter, or just the blessing of being able to enjoy the process of creating, I find that I am becoming more connected to my spirit through this artistic journey.
It’s exciting to watch the pieces come together as I am guided to new opportunities through both imagery and medium, to create spaces that are skewed vertically, yet visually believable. Whether a lone chair, a field of flowers, or an abstract face, vertical lines find their place in the composition. Through my artistic talents and imagination, I am able to fully express myself on the canvas.
I paint in my home studio in Decatur, Alabama.

I started making hand stamped jewelry 2 years ago after being inspired by motherhood. It has been a joy to be able to make personalized jewelry for other families. These pieces represent what is most important in life - a special phrase or message with deep or personal meaning, an inspirational word to help one get through a challenging time, or a keepsake with the names of one's children inscribed. Each pendant is hand stamped in my home studio in Huntsville. Some of my pieces are one-of-a-kind drawings created by individually hammered lines and textures.
Every single item is handcrafted with care to be certain the jewelry is the perfect gift or personal memento. Doing this craft has enabled me to share my profits and services with various charitable organizations within the community.
