Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.

Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point to the only ONE worthy of praise.

The Painted Bra Art Project: awareness for breast cancer

Art News from Anna Braden's Facebook page: The Painted Bra Art Project

The Painted Bra Art Project is to raise awareness for breast cancer; breast cancer awareness month is October. The purpose of this FB page is encourage artists to paint a bra and we will use this FB page to display the painted bras to raise awareness.

If we receive at least 20 painted bras and the owners are willing to donate the bras, I will set up an online auction on this page. All the procee...ds raised through the auction will be donated to breast cancer foundations such as the Liz Hurley breast cancer foundation, Susan Komen, etc. More details to follow once I talk to the right people regarding these foundations.

The online auction will take place in October (breast cancer awareness month). I will post the dates later.

Please email a picture of your painted bra to annabraden@comcast.net by 6 September 2011 or sooner. That will allow enough time to get all the pictures loaded and several weeks to promote our exhibit.

Thanks and have fun painting bras!! Anna

Jewelry Designer, Martina Svoboda featured in the Huntsville Times

Huntsville jewelry designer strives to make one-of-a-kind pieces for customers

Published: Sunday, August 14, 2011
By Sarah Cure, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Martina Svoboda defines multitasking.

The Czech Republic native is a wife, mother to a 3-year-old boy, volunteer, blogger and entrepreneur. Most can attest it’s a heavy, sometimes wearisome workload, yet Svoboda manages her hectic schedule with poise, modestly claiming “I’m a midnight worker.”

Amid such a bundle of responsibilities, it’s difficult to believe she has time for a hobby – but she does.

Svoboda moved to Huntsville about three years ago from Hawaii with her husband due to his career. Then two years ago, she approached Huntsville Art League and asked if she could not only exhibit her handmade jewelry, but teach a range of jewelry classes for high school students and adults.

If that wasn’t enough for the uber-ambitious Svoboda, she volunteered to redesign Huntsville Art League’s website and assumed the role as publicity chair – her area of expertise.

Art News from Amita Bhakta- Auction Artwork to benefit HIV Victims

Namaste' everyone, You will find this work soon on A Red Ribbon Affair in Face book for the art auction for HIV victims in Atlanta area; organized by Dr. Supi Bhakta Bhrambhatt, who works for CDC Atlanta, Ga. Please follow it, and enjoy the art auction.

Inspired by a poster from India created to raise awareness for Aids, which had few rural women chanting to the woman in center that your husband has gone to distance hope he does not bring you aids virus (instead of trinkets and goodies).

The rural women often has to carry water not their head. My work is made from mid fired stoneware clay which is glazed and finished with encaustic paints. It is 36" long and 15" wide. I choose clay as my medium because it is the oldest material on earth which has been used by artist to create their work and encaustic paints is one of the old painting techniques whose evidence goes back to Egyptian and roman times.

A simple explanation of my sculpture would be the idea of contrast – two very different things that are inter-related to create a balance. Contrasts that are not contradictory, but rather complementary are especially interesting to me. Symbols, such as unevenly balanced objects joined by chains, causes viewers to inwardly ask the question, "What am I bound to?" As simple as long forgotten memories of childhood activities or as monumental as a painful life tragedy, these things bind us and are a significant component of who we are. The relationship between mother and child, siblings and couples and the communities we live in and to which we are bound. The varied and dynamic events, places, people, and things that have touched us inform our future choices, commitments, habits, and journeys. As I convey this sense of destiny in my work, the final product allows viewers the opportunity to contemplate personal obligations, histories, and potentials.

As a child, I loved to watch the massive cargo ships laden with extremely heavy loads passing in and out of port near my hometown of New Orleans. In contrast to their industrial qualities, the shipsʼ displayed the amazing ability to glide easily through the water - an effect caused by the intelligence of man in a harmonious understanding of the forces of nature.

I have imitated this quality of extreme contrasts through the creation of bulky sculptures made of metal with intermittent moments of thin translucent lexan or plastic, creating an odd feeling of weighted light as an electric or solar bulb burns from within. Although normally considered to be weightless and free, here light has been trapped inside a hard dark cell. Though restricted to itsʼ metal case, the small inner glow is still allowed to share itsʼ beauty through the patterned panes of open space, making us aware that this element is just as powerful as the contrasting materials outwardly used for the sculptureʼs creation. The limitation of space does not restrict the lightʼs ability or influence, allowing two opposing forces to work together.

For me, the final artwork is only half of the journey of being an artist. The process is equally important. Though I am a sculptor, I also spend much of my time with graphite and paper -- drawing as many images as necessary to appropriately plan my actions for a 3D project. After settling on the right design by achieving a sense of completion with a drawing, a CAD designer converts the image to a format which can be sent to a laser service for precision cutting of the various pieces of steel or aluminum needed for my work. I then weld the pieces together over an armature for stability and support. Then, clear lexan material is riveted to the structure under the intricately patterned cutouts and spray-painted from the inside to achieve a variety of radiant colors. An interior light powered by a LED or solar device is placed in the interior space of the sculpture, and the piece is complete.

I have been working as a professional studio and public artist for over 10 years and my experience includes a broad spectrum of commissioned work and public art planning and development. I believe that sculpture site planning should incorporate the nuances of the land, the specific environment and/or any unique cultural features that will contextualize the onsite art. I research every project to better understand the character of the site and the best potential uses, that inspire creativity and innovation. My past experiences have facilitated an integrated approach to art planning which emphasizes active collaborations and partnerships with design teams, landscape architects, architects, engineers and the community as a whole. I work to understand the big picture, and know the importance of client and public involvement and the critical effect it has on the planning process and the project deliverable and outcome.

Morrisonʼs studio is located in the center of Wade Sand and Gravel, which is on the grounds the original Republic Steel company and home to one of the largest coke smelting plant in Alabama. Many of century old buildings remain from Birmingham's industrial revolution. The old coke ovens and pump houses are reminders of the days when the site boomed with activity as a Steel plant and as later as the Thomas Coke Works plant. My studio consists of the former coal testing lab and an adjacent rail car shed, which I am constantly in the process of restoring. Working from my studio on-site at the Wade Sand and Gravel quarry in the industrial district or Birmingham, Alabama, I continually inspired by the surroundings to create large objects fit for harsh environments. Many of the themes of my work are inspired by the perspective of working in the midst of the what remains of the industrial age of America. My work seeks both the representational and symbolic - based on the continuous interplay of nature, humanity and technology and the evolutionary effect each plays on the other.

Born in New Orleans in 1964, Morrison received her BA from The University of the South in Sewanee,Tennessee. She spent several years in London, working as an economist and the focus of her work was not only on methods of structural economic change, but also on improving the potential for the mass of population. It is this same desire to facilitate improving potential that led her to be a welder and an artist who seeks to create by cutting and re-fabricating steel and aluminum and integrating them with elements of very large stone. Morrison studied welding at Bessemer State College and began to work as a sculptor. Over the years, Morrison has expanded her spatial scope and currently focuses on large- scale work - including site- specific works created for architectural, urban, or landscape settings.

My earliest influence and exposure to the art of blacksmithing was as a child watching T.V. westerns limited as it was. I also grew up in a three story federal style house with iron work trim and accents which peaked my interest. I became fascinated with shaping metal.

Our High School not having a much in the way of a art program during a session with the Junior High guidance counselor on the subject of college prep I decided to enroll in welding at the the County Votech . After High School I enlisted in the Navy as a Hull Tech / Ship fitter. But prior to leaving for boot camp the summer of 1976 my family attendee the Bi-Centennial Celebration at Harpers Ferry, W.V. I spent most the day there watching the blacksmith demonstration. It had me hooked.

Twenty some years later after four years in the Navy , eighteen years working for the Dept of Army at the Letterkenny Army Depot . The Base Realignment and Closure Committee happens I accept a buy out and training funds which I invested at the John C. Campbell Folk Art School.

In 1997 I found myself in New Market Al. starting out as a stay at home dad and blacksmith. I started out selling at local markets and craft shows in the North Al and South TN.

When I first started I was making and selling mostly Sheppard hooks and rose arbors. I have increased my inventory and skill level. When I began I depended on my experience as a fabricator which still comes in handy. Along the way I have made the transition from well built to well crafted.

I employ basic blacksmithing techniques of forging and joinery incorporating what is considered modern welding practices . When I do employ other than traditional method of joinery I identify the process and do not pass work off as period or classical work that is not.

I no longer build rose arbors and have nearly phased out Sheppard hook. I craft pot racks , trivets, wall racks & hooks, candle holders and candelabras.

My vision is to further refine my art. I especially enjoy custom work in collaboration with a client where I am a conduit to bring their vision to reality.

Artist statement:

I express my deepest emotions on many types of mediums, but more recently have discovered that painting soothes the soul. I am inspired everyday by this majestical land we live in. Life is so beautiful, and I wish to convey its beauty on canvas. I can only hope to touch the lives of many people and to give them everlasting pleasure. I want to make others feel as beautiful as the pieces I create. People are very much like art and is truly a matter of interpretation.

Bio:

I was born in Southern Ohio. When I was a young boy I sat down and started to draw, I think I could draw before I could write. My parents moved me and my 3 brothers to Columbus, Ohio when I was around 10 yrs old. I did have an art class in grade school, but other than that I haven't had any formal training as far as art goes . I have always done art in some form or another since early childhood. I got married young to my childhood love and now have 2 boys to complete our beautiful family. My family and I moved from Ohio to a small town in North Alabama. My mother had always wanted me to choose a career as an artist, but I had always chosen to keep my art private. I started sharing my art about 8 yrs ago in the form of murals for friends , family, and local businesses . My mother passed away in 2009 and I found an empty spot in my life, to fill that emptiness I started to do paintings on canvas . As time went on, I was painting so much that it was time to take it further and here I am showing my work to anyone that will look. My work fills a gap in my life and hopefully it can fill a gap for someone else as well .
