Master Artist Workshop – Color & Light Revealed Through the Landscape Studio Oil Painting with Conor O’Brien

September 8-10, 2011

Explore paint application, composition design, color and value choices. Create light patterns and atmospheric perspective for a sense of distance in the landscape. Capture the essence of a place through the use of photographs as reference, but without trying to make the painting look photographic. By close observations and comparisons, simplifying the masses, working on color mixing, and brushwork, the student will leave with a stronger knowledge of painting the landscape. Demos, a slide presentation, and critiques included. Open to all levels of artists who want to master the fundamentals of painting.

Three-Day Workshop fee is $195 members/$210 non-members. A confirmation letter and supply list will be sent upon receipt of workshop registration fee payment. Pre-registration is required. Register online http://www.hsvmuseum.org/ and click Museum Academy – Master Artist Workshop or call 256-535-4350 ext. 222. Space is limited to 15 students, so REGISTER NOW. This workshop is filled on a first-come, first-served basis!

Conor O’Brien (Huntsville, Alabama) is known for his paintings about natural and manmade landscapes, still lifes, and portraits using traditional oil painting materials and techniques. Conor’s work was included in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s exhibitions – Local Color in 2005 and Encounters in November 11, 2007-February 17, 2008. Currently, Conor works in his home studio and in his public studio at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment (#326, 3rd floor). Give Away- different colors of house paint, (some are bright colors)

Art News from Lowe Mill ARTS manager, David Edwards:

If anyone is in need of different colors of house paint, (some are bright colors) The Seminole Boys & Girls Club is getting rid of what they have. Their # = 256-564-7018.

Call for Art- Beauty Amid Destruction art banners- to benefit tornado hit Tuscaloosa, AL

Thanks Connie Ulrich and David Edward for sending Art News:

CALL FOR ART

Give us BEAUTY!

The devastation caused by the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa April 27, 2011 defies description. The visual impact of the ravaged landscape is still shocking, horrifying, and depressing. Brilliant color, pleasing images, and signs of renewal in these areas are needed to help raise the spirits of the community as it digs out, cleans up, and begins to rebuild.

We are asking visual artists to help us produce art banners that can be displayed in the areas wrecked by the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa. Artists are invited to submit a digital image of an original work of art which will be inserted into our art banner template and professionally printed on a banner material suitable for outdoor display. To the see the template, click on the second link to your left.

The 4' x 6' art banner will be professionally printed with high quality inks for outdoor signage. We have selected a local printing company capable of producing reproductions that represent true color and detail of the digital images provided, on material chosen to hold up to our harsh outdoor conditions. The art banner will include the art image, name of the artist, copyright notice, and the Beauty Amid Destruction wordmark and web address.

Participating artists are asked to pay the $150 fee for printing the art banners. (The fee is tax deductible). Beauty Amid Destruction will solicit donations to pay for the other installation costs.

An online Beauty Amid Destruction gallery is planned. It will include an image of each artwork, artist credit, title of the artwork, medium and location of the art banner.

We very much want Beauty Amid Destruction art banners to demonstrate the full range of artistic styles and to allow all artists to express their creativity in whatever manner suits them. However, due to the nature of this project, we may not be able to display all images submitted. In this case, payments will be refunded and images returned.

Beauty Amid Destruction art banners will likely be viewed largely from a distance of approximately 50-75 feet, such as from passing vehicles. The images, which will be placed on the 4'x 6' banner, should be of such type that it can be seen clearly from at least 50 feet.

Again, it is art of brilliant color, pleasing images, and signs of renewal that are needed in these areas that are now a brown/gray mess of broken, twisted and tangled trees, houses, vehicles, and household goods. And beauty amid this destruction is needed immediately.

Please honor us with the gift of an art banner depicting your artwork.

Submission Guidelines:

1. Digital images must be of original works of art and must be submitted by the person/entity owning the rights to reproduce.

2. CD containing image of art work to be printed on art banner and Artist Statement about the image(s) submitted.

3. Submitted image must be labeled as follows: Lastname_Firstname_image number. file type (ex: Smith_Sam_01.jpeg)

4. Digital image should have a pixel dimension of at least 2000x3000 or be at least 300 dpi. No cell phone images will be accepted.

5. Files must be a jpg, tiff, or photoshop file.

6. A signed Artist Agreement Form must accompany all digital images submitted. Visit Beauty Amid Destruction's website (third link to the left) for the Artist Agreement Form.

7. Payment for printing the art banner must accompany all digital images submitted. No credit cards, please. Make checks payable to: Beauty Amid Destruction.

8. Deadline for submitting digital images is July 31, 2011 for phase one. As this is a volunteer operation, we cannot yet guarantee that we will have the volunteers to mount art banners submitted after this date.

9. Mail CD with payment of $150 per art banner and signed agreement form to:

A Sense of Place: Plein Air Painters of the Southeast

August 7 – September 23, 2011

Huntsville, AL – A Sense of Place showcases recent work by members of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE), an organization of professional painters bound by a common passion to promote the methods of painting en plein air— a French term referring to the traditional process of painting out-of-doors, on location, in an impressionistic style.

Dee Beard Dean, along with a handful of fellow painters, founded PAP-SE in 2001, inspired by a dream to build a professional organization of painters living and working in our region. The mission of the core group of painters was threefold: to hone their painting skills through the demanding rigors of painting outdoors; to enjoy the camaraderie and shared knowledge of fellow plein air painters; and to raise awareness and appreciation of this classic method of painting among art collectors and connoisseurs.

Academic training and professional recognition matter in PAP-SE’s member selection process, but outstanding talent is the main criterion. Most members are primarily oil painters though several are also accomplished pastelists. Says Dean, "Looking back, how proud I am of this association of distinguished painters, whose level of excellence has made this group one of the top plein air organizations in the country. From its inception, PAP-SE has maintained high standards of excellence, which has brought it national recognition.”

A Sense of Place presents over seventy works by 20 current members of PAP-SE. As a special feature of the exhibition, most finished studio works will be accompanied by their original plein air sketches, allowing the viewer to study the working methods of each artist. All of the works in the exhibition are available for sale, with proceeds to benefit the Huntsville Museum of Art.

Join us at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, when several participating artists will speak about their work in the galleries, followed by a reception in the Richard and Roper Room.

An exciting 3-day Plein Air Workshop is additionally planned in the Museum Academy from September 20-22, taught by a rotating selection of PAP-SE artists. The workshop provides a unique opportunity to learn from some of the finest plein air painters in the region as they address the challenge of painting a landscape in the moment. For additional information on the workshop, visit the Museum’s website at www.hsvmuseum.org/programs/plein-air-workshop/.

Beautiful Feet

"Beautiful Feet" Anklet by Gina Hurst- Art inspired by the WORD

How then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent. As it is written (Isa 52:7) "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the GOOD NEWS!" Romans 10: 14-15

Featured Artist: Jan Renegar

“My name is Jan and own Mosaic Crosses and Crafts. I am an artist living in north Alabama. I make handcrafted wooden crosses, frames, and other shapes all using mosaic glass, stones, and glass pieces. Each and every piece is unique, not one is ever the same. Just like the way God made us (Psalm 139: 13,14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well).

I got into this business through my sister, Sara. She lived in Huntsville while her husband was serving in Afghanistan, and we would work together creating crosses to sell at local art shows. Sara moved away when her husband came home, and now it’s just me (with a little help from Chase, my husband). I enjoy creating beautiful, unique pieces through mosaic art. God made the world with so many beautiful colors, different shapes, sizes, and resources… it’s fun to use my talents to create and for display in someone’s home to enjoy! (Romans 12:6,7 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching”)

The cross represents what Christ did on the cross, may we never forget the sacrifice that was made for us! Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
