Corry Lee Smith is offering art documentation/slide work service to local artists
Art News from David Edwards, Manager, Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment
256.533.0399, http://www.lowemill.net/
-------------------------
Hi All,
Corry Lee Smith is offering art documentation/slide work as a service to artists in the area. Especially for the folks at the mill. He can only accommodate smaller sizes right now, especially for 3D work, but plans on expanding what he does.
He's a really good art photographer and this sideline business was a way for him to upgrade equipment. For right now until he figures out another pricing schedule, it's set at $65/hour with a 30 minute minimum. His emails are below as is his blurb and links.
I think it'll also be a good way to get Corry back into doing his brilliant photography work, when he's not being funny for CrashBoomBang! that is!
David
-------------------------------------------------
Artists should have their work documented, for their own records, for grant applications, and submissions to competitions and juried shows. I have spoken to a couple of jurors who have told me that poor photos have caused them to reject submissions. A high-quality photo can make a difference.
I offer accurate photo documentations of visual artwork -- paintings, small sculpture, and glass -- done at your site at reasonable prices. Future plans include 360-degree capture and even 3-D imaging.
I'll have more info on Facebook and unclaimedmysteries.net as this operation gets going. I can always be reached via email at: clsmith@unclaimedmysteries.net or unclaimedmysteries@gmail.com.

Christopher Madkour named Huntsville Museum of Art's new executive director
By Sarah Cure, The Huntsville Times, June 6, 2011
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - The quest for a new executive director for the Huntsville Museum of Art has ended.
After a months-long search following former CEO and president Clayton Bass’s resignation in December 2010, the museum’s board of directors selected Christopher J. Madkour. He officially accepted the job in mid-May.
Madkour, a Vermont native, currently serves as the director of exhibitions and marketing for Gloria Vanderbilt in New York City, a position he’s held since the start of 2010. He’s responsible for marketing, sales and curation of Vanderbilt’s personal fine art collection consisting of her own pieces.
Before he accepted Vanderbilt’s request to help her at her New York studio, Madkour served as executive director of the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, Vt., from 1988 to 2010. Madkour was just 29 years old when he accepted that position, making him the youngest director of the institution.

Art Views in the Southeast: Ellen Pryor
Although Ellen Pryor is currently working as the communications director of the Frist Center in Nashville, she is originally from Huntsville and has deep ties to the Huntsville Museum of Art as well. With a big Andy Warhol exhibit coming up at the end of June and interesting programs and exhibits year-round, the Frist Center is a wonderful art destination for anyone in the Tennessee Valley. For more information, please visit http://www.fristcenter.org.
1. Why is art important to you?
Art is important to me. ArtS are important to me! In addition to enriching our lives by the sheer joy of “consumption,” the arts are how we deepen our understanding of the world around us, how we express ourselves, our hopes, frustrations, irritations, desires and aspirations.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that placed a high value on the arts. When I was really little and my mom would take me to museums, or to hear classical music or opera, she’d always tell me, “it’s not important right now that you appreciate what I’m showing you; it IS important that you know it’s there… that people were moved to write music or paint. Appreciation will come in time, and love of the arts will quickly follow.” She was right!
My mother was musical. My father was a visual artist. My aunt helped found the Huntsville Museum of Art, and my uncle was an enthusiastic supporter of the museum. I understand now what a tremendous gift they gave me and am so grateful to them.
2. How would you describe Nashville's Art Scene?
The Nashville art scene is incredibly vibrant and exciting. New galleries are opening all over town, and artists are moving to Middle Tennessee at a great rate. Nashville is a tremendously creative community, and that creativity is palpable! Just this past weekend, we had the First Saturday Art Crawl. The streets downtown were teeming with people of all ages streaming in and out of galleries. First Saturday Art Crawl is part of a “First Art Weekend” of art happenings all over town. Here is a link, so you can see how it works.
3. What do you enjoy most about working with the Frist Center?
Oh, there are so many things I love about being at the Frist Center. First, of course, is the art! The quality of the exhibitions we have in the galleries is truly amazing. Last year we had The Golden Age of Couture from the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Birth of Impressionism from the Musee d’Orsay. We were the only American venue for the couture show, and one of three in the world for The Birth of Impressionism. Our curators do a truly magnificent job of securing truly incredible exhibitions.. and organizing them, as well!
We are a tremendously populist institution. We are constantly looking for ways to remove barriers to attendance. We have terrific docents, volunteers, visitor services and security staff who work really hard to make everyone feel comfortable.
Attendance is free to our visitors 18 and younger. We are also free to college students on Thursday and Friday evenings. It’s wonderful to see so many young people eager to learn about art.
We’re open two nights a week, so people who work have additional opportunities to enjoy the Frist Center, and on those nights, we also program free music, so it’s a great date night!
We are an educational organization, dedicated to helping people understand more about art. We work closely with the schools in our area, and that’s such a joy. Just this morning as I walked down the gallery that is the main entrance, there was a teacher who had gathered a classroom of (what looked to be) first graders. They were studying the children’s stories depicted in our Connecting Cultures exhibition. Our educators for outreach worked with 10 ethnic communities in Nashville to illustrate children’s stories from their cultures. The teacher was using these stories from around the world to engage her little students in a discussion about other countries and cultures. Our Martin ArtQuest Gallery is an intergenerational, interactive space where visitors of all ages can make art and learn in the process.
We do not have a permanent collection, so there is always something new to see, and our educators plan incredible programs with each exhibition, so there are lots of ways to deepen enjoyment and understanding of each exhibition.
And I love it that so many people from across the country and around the world visit us. I worked yesterday afternoon and met people from 5 countries. And, we have loads of folks from Huntsville! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked through the Grand Lobby to discover an old friend from Huntsville! That happened yesterday, too! A retired colonel had driven up for a jazz concert, and I just happened to meet him when the concert was over!
4. Do you also make art? If so, tell us more about it. . .
Alas, I do not… but I WANT to be an artist… Does that count?!?!? ;-)
5. What is your advice to young people who would like careers in the arts?
Drink in as much as you possibly can. Go see everything. Take every opportunity to see and learn about art. Find like-minded people and spend time with them. Go see exhibitions together and talk about what you’ve seen. Go to lectures and gallery talks. Visit galleries, meet artists. It’s all important.
And I’d advise keeping an open mind about careers in the arts. There are many careers in the arts, and not all of them involve painting or acting, or playing music. Arts organizations also need writers, accountants, teachers, event planners and IT people.
6. How can people become more involved with the Frist Center?
First, just come! Visit the galleries, come hear music, come to our programs. We are open 362 days a year, and as I mentioned, we’re also open two nights a week. We have a great weekly email newsletter that is distributed each Wednesday. Sign up to see what’s happening, and visit our website… www.Fristcenter.org. There is a calendar of events chock full of films, lectures, music, gallery talks, family days.
Membership is a great way to support us… and the Huntsville Museum of Art! Membership in arts organizations is a terrific way to support the arts.
7. Knowing Huntsville as well as you do, what would you suggest to a growing arts community like Huntsville?
Oh, goodness! It was Huntsville’s arts scene that inspired me! I grew up going to Fantasy Playhouse, listening to the Huntsville Symphony, going to the ballet, acting at Huntsville High School and going to the museum. Far be it from me to offer advice to Huntsville!

“There are endless passions we share as a couple. We love the Lord, each other, the outdoors, plants, trees, healthy eating, book stores, hot tea, antiques, animals, fabric, painting, building things, music, people, sewing… okay… maybe Chase doesn’t enjoy the sewing part ;)
We married on June 17, 2006, and have one little furry-four-legged “baby”, Snuggles. We are incredibly blessed to have each other, and are enjoying spending the rest of our life with our best friend and soul mate. We absolutely love using natural light to create beautiful imagery. Green Tree is dedicated to their clients, and show they care by using natural resources and fibers, and high quality products for you to LOVE and enjoy for a lifetime. Our heart is for you to cherish art that you can show your family today, and your children and grandchildren tomorrow.
We chose our business name from a verse in Jeremiah. Jeremiah 17:7-8 (English Standard Version) 7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit." May your leaves always be green as you stay grounded in Christ!
