Capturing a Sense of Place

A three-day workshop September 20-22, 2011

We are excited to partner with the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE) for an exciting three-day workshop to be held in Huntsville, Alabama. The goals of PAP-SE are to foster an understanding and appreciation of plein air painting, to aid each other in the pursuit of artistic excellence and to highlight the landscape, as well as, the art of our region. The workshop will be taught with a rotating selection of artists and will be a unique opportunity to learn from some of the finest plein air painters in the south. Three different locations will allow each participant the chance to master varied subject matters and situations.

Featured Artists for the Workshop:

DEE BEARD DEAN has her studio in North Carolina and is a founding member of PAP-SE. She is known nationally for her painterly landscapes and expertise in watercolors, oils and pastels. She is a gifted teacher and offers workshops throughout the United States and abroad.

RICHARD OVERSMITH, from North Carolina, follows his passion and paints plein art throughout the southeast. His work has appeared in the Oil Painters National Exhibit in Illinois, in the O.P.A. Show in California and the Oil Painters of America Regional Exhibition in Virginia.

DIANE CRUICKSHANKS MAY , from Nashville, partners her commitment to the art of plein air paint-ing with her passion for environmental causes. She is the current president of PAP-SE and her work can be found in exhibitions throughout the southeast.

PAULA FRIZBE lives in Tennessee and paints on location throughout the southeast. Her work was se-lected for exhibition at the Oil Painters of America Regional Show and has been accepted in juried shows throughout the region.

BRETT WEAVER, is a nationally recognized artist who focuses on preserving impressions of the natural landscape as it is rapidly diminishing. He travels extensively painting on location and completing stud-ies to feed his studio work back in Tennessee.

ANNE BLAIR BROWN lives and maintains her studio in Nashville. While developing her craft painting the towns, hills and waterways of Tennessee, she has especially enjoyed painting coastal cities both east-ern and western. As a former chef, her love for restaurants and cafes is reflected in her work, as well as, a love of the buildings and streets that mark everyday existence.

KEVIN MENCK was born and raised in Middle Tennessee. While being a self-employed illustrator for over 16 years, Kevin was introduced to landscape painting. As an avid outdoorsman, he has a deep love and respect for nature and wants his viewers to see his work and “know what it was like to be there”.

We hope to exceed that number this year as the military community takes advantage of the rich cultural heritage they defend and protect every day.”

Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer. The effort to recruit museums has involved the partnership efforts of The American Association of Museums, the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Association of Children’s Museums, and the American Association of State and Local History. This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and 70 children’s museums.

Huntsville Mayor Unveils Public Art Plan

Video of Mayor Tommy Battle announcing Public Art Plan

Huntsville Times Article by Sarah Cure, arts writer

Call for Public Art- Solutions | Uptown Business Association

Solutions Uptown Business Association

The City of Huntsville, in co-operation with the Uptown Business Association, has graciously provided the opportunity for the inclusion of various works of public art on the newly renovated

Cleveland Avenue between Meridian St. and the railroad tracks at the Dog Park.

A CALL TO ALL LOCAL ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE IN A PUBLIC ART PROJECT

“Solutions” is our unifying theme for artist’s submission. Under the context of a question marking an area on the streetscape, artists should respond with an answer to the question “What does the situation require?” or, “What is the solution?” As a predominate engineering community, solving problems is routine; but it is the goal of “Solutions” to involve art in the thought process of city streetscapes. Without design our bridges would model erector sets, homes and buildings would be boxes, cars would be projectiles with switches and meters. Art is the major component in any solution that breathes life into functionality.

The Cleveland re-location project has provided space for art to answer the challenge of what the city needs, what the community appreciates and what the neighborhood reflects. We are opening up eight different opportunities for murals, sidewalk surface art, sculptures and moving installations which are all listed separately at “art solutions sites”…link. These sites will all be filled by local artists over the coming months but our first area of focus is the sidewalk surface art. The circles are the most challenging because they represent an opportunity to begin a trend that could continue throughout the city so think BIG!

The Gateway Advisory Art Panel (G.A.A.P) will select three semi-finalists who best meet guidelines and criteria in answering the question with art that states “this is what the situation requires.” The “situation” as defined by the artist can include (but not limited to) questions such as:

1.What is required to best enhance the physical space?

2.How do you involve the pedestrian to broaden their field of vision or where are the nearby points of interest?

3.How did Huntsville evolve to this point or what could the city need as it looks to the future?

Defining the question can be as challenging as creating the art to provide the solution. In doing so, you as the artist, may be co-authoring a process that could help spread solutions for art throughout the city.

After the semi-finalists are anounced the submissions will be sent to city council for approval as a web-based voting process is opened to the public.

Submissions guidelines are listed below each site and are subject to change as the program evolves, so be sure to stay email current listed to receive any updates.

Check out site at Solutions Uptown Business Association: http://uptownbusinessassociation.info/?page_id=218 hover over the SOLUTION TAB and it will list submisssions for:

Frist Center: FREE Admission for Military May 30-Sept 5

This just in from Nashville! (The Huntsville Museum of Art is also among the Blue Star Museums for 2011-- for a full list of participating museums, click here.)

NASHVILLE, TENN. – (May 23, 2011) – The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will join more than 1,300 museums across the nation to participate in the Blue Star Museums program, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to offer free admission to active duty military personnel and up to five immediate family members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor
Day 2011.

“Blue Star Museums may be the program at the NEA of which I am proudest,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “Blue Star Museums recognizes and thanks our military families for all they are doing for our country, and simultaneously begins young people on a path to becoming lifelong museum goers.”

“I echo Chairman Landesman’s sentiments,” said Frist Center Executive Director Susan H. Edwards, Ph. D. “It is an honor for the Frist Center to join the National Endowment for the Arts and our sister museums throughout the United States to salute members of our military and the families who support them for their service to our country. With Ft. Campbell just up the road and so many National Guard and Reservists in the area, we are pleased to be a part of this program. In times of crisis and turmoil, people often turn to the arts for solace and inspiration, so it is particularly fitting in these trying times that we open our doors to those servicemen and women responsible for protecting our country and the families who have the difficult job of taking care of things at home.”

During the period covered by the program, the Frist Center will feature several major exhibitions, including Gather Up the Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection in the Upper-Level Galleries; Connecting Cultures: Children’s Stories from Across the World in the Conte Community Arts Gallery; and opening June 24, 2011, Warhol Live: Music and Dance in Andy Warhol’s Work in the Ingram Gallery and Vesna Pavlović: Projected Histories in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery.

The Blue Star Museums program runs from Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, through Labor Day, September 5, 2011. Free admission is available during this period to active-duty military personnel and up to five immediate adult family members. Active duty military include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members. Military IDs accepted include the Geneva Convention common access card (CAC); DD Form 1173 ID Card or DD Form 1173-1 ID Card. Admission to the Frist Center is always free for visitors 18 years of age and younger.

This is the latest NEA program to bring quality arts programs to military service members, veterans and their families. Other NEA programs for the military have included Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience; Great American Voices Military Base Tour and Shakespeare in American Communities Military Base Tour.

This is an update post to the call for artists that was posted on the art blog earlier.

Three Alabama Students Reel in State-Fish Art Contest Honors

Two largemouth bass and a bluegill (bream) cast three Alabama students into the winner’s circle of the 2011 Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest. The Alabama winners are: 6th grader Hannah Walton from Barbara Keel Art School in Auburn, largemouth bass; 8th grader Sam Darring from St. Patrick School in Robersdale, bluegill; and senior Christina Rhodes from Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School in Montgomery, largemouth bass. The Alabama winners were chosen from thousands of entries submitted by students nationwide.

Winners from each state will have the opportunity to join talented young artists from across the country at the State-Fish Art Expo on June 24 and 25, at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, TX. All winning artwork will be on display and an awards ceremony will recognize the winners before a large crowd. Each winning artist who attends the Expo will receive great prizes, goodie bags, and fishing supplies from Rapala.

“Wildlife Forever is pleased to honor the talented young artists, educators and parents who make the State-Fish Art Contest such a successful program,” said Douglas H. Grann, President & CEO of Wildlife Forever. “Together, we are using art to empower a new generation of conservationists. By sharing their fish art with family, friends and the general public, our young people are becoming ambassadors for good stewardship of fish and wildlife habitat.”

National awards to be announced at the State-Fish Art Expo include the top artwork for each grade category and the ‘Seth Thomas Spradlin Best of Show Award’ honors for the top artwork. The national “Best of Show” winner in grades 10-12 will receive a $2,500 scholarship to The Art Institutes International Minnesota. The first runner-up in grades 10-12 will also receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college.

The People’s Choice Award will be determined by a worldwide public online vote through www.statefishart.org or directly at www.photoscramble.com/ContestView.aspx?ContestId=119. Online voting will conclude on June 23, with additional votes collected in person at the State-Fish Art Expo. A brand-new annual recognition, the “Smile Award,” will be given to a piece of art, selected from all the entries, that just “makes you smile and feel good inside.”

One outstanding piece of artwork will win the ‘Art of Conservation’ Stamp Award and be reproduced as a conservation stamp. Proceeds from the stamp will be used to fund the State-Fish Art Contest and children’s outdoor education.

Judges for this year's competition included: David Hartwell – President, Bellcomb Technologies, Robert Hautman - Wildlife Artist, two-time Federal Duck Stamp winner, Greg Huff - Social Media Editor, North American Fishing Club, Dirk Peterson - Chief of Fisheries, Minnesota DNR, Dale Schulz - Wildlife Forever Board Member, plus Scott Grieve - Wildlife Forever Chairman of Board (Alternate Judge).

Wildlife Forever's 13th annual State-Fish Art Contest was made possible by support from: the North American Fishing Club, Rapala, Blick Art Materials, The Art Institutes International, Minnesota, Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, the U.S. Forest Service Eastern Region, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.

Wildlife Forever is a non-profit conservation organization based in Minnesota that works to preserve America’s wildlife heritage through conservation education, preservation of habitat and scientific management of fish and wildlife species. Wildlife Forever projects in Alabama include the Flint Creek fish habitat improvements and the Tsinia Wildlife Viewing Area at Alabama’s Tuskegee National Forest. Ankica Mitrovska

One of the things I value the most as an international student is the way travel has increased my understanding of many different cultures of the world. This diversity of experience has made a great impact on my artistic vision. My interaction with people of different backgrounds has helped me to learn who I am as an artist. My interest in the function of the body reflects the way I see, think, and feel about my physical environment.

My most recent body of work “Essentia” focuses on the understanding of the physical body as an essential piece of everything that surrounds us. Conceptual motifs such as the desire to invoke, to render, and to suggest body and spirit infuse my current work. Each painting creates an ambiguous space that allows gesture to operate on form, evoking a sense of time, movement, and transformation. Moreover this gesture becomes an action that allows the unconscious part of the psyche to assert and express itself creating elegant volumetric abstractions of seductive explorations of color, form, and figuration.

As part of my educational experience has been exposure to different styles of art through faculty, fellow students, and courses in the theory and history of art. The artistic and academic community has been helpful in the development of my artistic knowledge and communication skills. I believe that working in an academic community of artists is crucial to the learning experience and the successful creation of meaningful work.

Fast, Loose & Out of Control: Bobby Allison & The Alabama Gang

May 15 – July 24

Huntsville, AL – This special exhibition is organized by the Museum in celebration of racing legend Bobby Allison’s upcoming induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The exhibit will include rare and little-seen memorabilia loaned by Allison and other members of “The Alabama Gang,” the nickname for the NASCAR drivers who set up shop and operated out of Hueytown, Alabama, beginning in the late 1950s.

Featured items include, numerous trophies and awards from Allison’s illustrious career. Of special note is Bobby’s 1983 Winston Cup Trophy; the #312 Legend Car, a ¾ scale replica of Bobby’s 1937 Chevrolet Coupe that he drove in the early 60’s; and never before seen items of early racing technology designed and built for Allison and The Gang. Other items on display include photos and memorabilia from the good old days when The Gang pitted their skills against hometown boys here at Huntsville Speedway.
