Flags From Any Nation Needed!

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment needs help for it's 5th Annual Good Day Kids Festival. The festival is Saturday, May 7th, from 12-4 PM. There will be art activities, music, a parade, and a dance party. We're looking for people to come paint or donate a flag from any nation, or state, or to let us borrow one for our Kids festival. If you're interested in painting one, you can do so at our Concerts on the Dock or bring in a finished flag. We'd like the size to be 2 1/2 feet by 4 feet. We need the flags by Monday May 2nd.The theme this year is celebrating our cultural heritages and kids and adults are encouraged to wear traditional costumes from any country. If you'd like to volunteer, call Evan Billiter at 256-797-2289. Or if you just want to bring your kids, we'd love to have you all come out.

Huntsville Museum of Art Exhibit- Future Retro: Drawings from the Great Age of Automobiles

Future Retro:
Drawings from the Great Age of Automobiles

May 15 – July 24

Huntsville, AL – Future Retro: Drawings from the Great Age of American Automobiles showcases the beauty and ingenuity of American automotive design during the decades following World War II, a landmark period in car styling. Drawn entirely from the collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, this installation is organized and distributed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Along with the installation, the MFA has produced a book entitled Future Retro featuring over 50 color illustrations — many never before published — as well as text that discusses the role of the designer, the influence of emerging technologies, and the ways in which these illustrations depict a particularly resonant segment of the American dream.

Future Retro provides visitors with a rare glimpse into the creative process behind the scenes at some of Detroit’s premiere car companies through an eclectic mix of illustrations, ranging from preliminary sketches to fully rendered works intended for presentation to company executives. Some of the drawings featured in the installation offer concepts that would later be incorporated into specific models, while others represent futuristic ideas that never made it past the drawing board. Dating from an era when design and appearance were increasingly important factors in automotive sales, there are ample references to the shapes of airplanes and rockets, along with other emerging technologies that influenced postwar car design.

Call for Art- Silent Auction- Proceeds to Help Madison Animal Rescue Foundation

The Madison Animal Rescue Foundation was started as a grass roots, all volunteer committee over 2 years ago. The goal is to rescue homeless pets in Madison, Alabama. We have been quite successful, finding homes for over 600 animals. All the animals have been vetted and neutered before adoption.

We are planning a big 2nd Birthday Party on April 30th at the Westin. One of the activities will be a Silent Auction. This event promises to be a large, well-attended, classy party.

Artists, if you have a love of animils, we would love a donation of your artwork to be auctioned off for a worthy cause. We can send you a receipt for your donation, and we will advertise your company.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give us. It all goes to the animals.

I would need your donation by April 17th.

Those who do shows "on the road" and want to accept credit cards...

If you have an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, there is a new little device that attaches to it, with which you can swipe a credit card.

The fee is 15 cents plus 2.75% per swipe (pretty typical), and it takes Visa, M/C, AmeX, and Discover. No monthly fee; and the little swiper is free too!

Good article with the details from Forbes Magazine:

Poem and Photography - A Project

About the Project

Kindly, click on the link above to read the poem!

This is a "discovered art" project arranged by Sam Tumminello, the photographer April 2011, for web publication, with permission of Ms. Faye Gaston, Poet and Mr. Malcolm Thomas, the Civil War re-enactor.

An interesting chronology...

April 12, 1861, The American Civil War begins - Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

October 1993, the photograph of young Mr. Thomas was made at a re-enactment staged at East Clinton School. At the time of this web publication, Mr. Thomas is beginning to do more re-enactment work to interest his son in the history.

In 1998, Ms. Gaston wrote the poem when she was presented the photograph as part of an Huntsville Photographic Society project to use photography to inspire poetry.

In 2000, Ms. Gaston's poem "He's Twenty, Going On Forty", was a National Award Winner, and published in the book, Grandmother Earth VII: 2001; featuring award-winning poetry and prose from the 2000 Grandmother Earth National Writing Contest and, featuring Life Press Writers and edited by Patricia Smith and Frances Brinkley Cowden. -- Grandmother Earth Creations, Memphis, Tennessee.

(On April 9, 1865, Confederate resistance ended after Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Court House, Virginia)

Master Artist Workshop at the Huntsville Museum of Art

HUNTSVILLE MUSEUM OF ART MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOP 2011

EXPLORE, CREATE & LEARN!

Painting Enthusiasts,

Join Us for a Master Artist Workshop 2011 with Barrie Lynn Bryant!

Art + Frame = A Complete Work of Art
Unifying the Picture Frame with the Artwork It Contains

Thursday, May 19 – 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Friday, May 20 – 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Students will become familiar with picture frame history through a lecture and visual aid; they will learn how frames are made and with what materials they are made, such as types of woods, gold leaf techniques, and non- traditional materials such as steel and stained glass.

Create more meaningful and artful picture frames that unify themselves with the artworks they contain. Use your imagination to design a unique picture frame on paper and then share the designs through group discussion. Students will take home a gold leaf picture frame that they have embellished with sgraffito design by applying hand made egg tempera (egg yolk + pigment powder) and then removing part of the tempera to reveal the gold leaf underneath. Open to all levels of artist who want to learn more about the art of the frame. Demos, presentation, and critiques included.

Barrie Lynn Bryant (Kirby, Wyoming) – Picture frames and artworks go together like couples do with marriage. Creating meaningful relationships between my picture frames and my wife’s paintings is my goal. The ultimate compliment is when someone says, “These paintings couldn’t be framed any other way. They are complete works of art.” To see current works and projects as well as read the Bryant’s travelogue, see their blog www.merglenn.blogspot.com.

To register, call 256-535-4350 ext. 222 or download the registration form from the Museum’s website and mail or fax (256-532-1743) it to the Museum. You can also register on-line at www.hsvmuseum.org and click on the Museum Academy link.

Space is limited to 12 students, so REGISTER NOW. This workshop is filled on a first-come, first-served basis! See the website for photo examples!

Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.

Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point to the only ONE worthy of praise.

Photography has been my passion for all of my adult life. As a young architecture student, I used a camera to help document the drawings and models I made in design class. I knew that balsa -wood models would not survive college life, and photography was a way to capture and preserve those earliest ideas. Later in life, photography became less of a tool for recording, and more of a way to express myself creatively. My early influences were Paul Strand, Brett Weston and John Sexton.

My subjects are varied and ever changing, and while I really began my professional career as a photojournalist, I have explored, to some extent, almost every other photographic discipline including portraiture, architectural, editorial, travel and fine art. It is this last area, fine art, where I find myself most comfortable, and the place I always seem to return to. I seek out the order in things, a desire undoubtedly influenced by my architectural training. My compositional approach is an attempt to reduce the subject to its simplest graphic form while maintaining balance and harmony. I try to make the mundane look interesting; i.e. make a door appear otherworldly, or find something beautiful within an old deteriorating industrial landscape. Although I have experimented with alternative techniques such as HDR and Orton, I try to preserve the subject in its original state using minimal post-processing.

I am as enthusiastic about my craft today, as I have ever been. While I still use film occasionally, the advantages that digital technology presents cannot be dismissed. To be able to easily and accurately convey to the viewer, just what originally drew me to the subject, is but one of the many significant advantages I find with digital photography. If I choose to interpret the image in a completely different way, digital technology gives me the tools, freedom and control to do that. Recently, I got back to doing black and white work, after a long hiatus, following my photojournalistic days. The latest advances in inkjet printers produce results comparable to those once achievable only from film. Black and white reduces any scene into its most basic elements, and the absence of color forces the work to stand on its own. I like that.

My work is a reflection of my love of the physicality of clay. I believe that everyone has personal imagery, a dialog of images that they reference. Mine has always been dinosaurs and strange creatures of the world. I don’t just want to create a realistic rendering of a creature I want the character of each piece to develop somewhat organically. I start with a photograph (probably taken by me) and I sculpt each piece hollow with slabs of clay. I sculpt and carve till I get something I like and then it must dry. The longer the better. After a bisque firing I use underglazes in a watercolor technique and glaze the surface. Each piece is fired again to almost 2000 degrees. Sometimes I ask myself why I feel so compelled to create animal effigies? I think I just really enjoy to be surrounded by a wild menagerie of crazy critters.

I will be exhibiting in Mobile, AL at Wellbourne Ideas from Feb. 11 - March 7 in conjunction with the Alabama clay conference.
