Art News from Vicki Garner

Hey everyone,

Time for a few updates on my art work:

1. I have been doing a few pet portraits lately and thought that maybe some of you may be interested in a portrait of your pet. I have updated my website (see link below) to include samples of some of the pets I have painted and my pricing. Just click on the button that says Pet Portraits.

2. I will be at First Fridays in Florence next Friday, April 1st. My booth is right across from Rosie's Cantina on Court Street. Hope to see some of you there.

3. I have set some artistic goals for myself this year to paint some landscapes that are not my usual subject matter. I have completed two of those goals so far....a storm scene and a snow scene, both of which you can find on the landscape page of my website. Next up will be an urban scene from Beale Street in Memphis, which I visited for the first time this month. I hope to complete a nocturnal landscape and a rainy day scene later on in the year. Stay tuned!

Check out the website! www.applepandowdy.com

Thanks,

Vicki

Featured Arts Community Leader: Marguerite McClintock

Reflectives Frame and Art Gallery at Artisans Cove

Marguerite with two of her animal friends

Interview by Christina Wegman

Owner of Reflectives Frame and Art Gallery Marguerite McClintock is more than a businesswoman-- she is also deeply interested in fostering community and education through her work. For more information on services, programs, and events at Artisans Cove, please visit http://reflectivesframe.com or http://artisanscove.com.

1) When did you first become interested in the arts?

I first became interested at a very young age. I've always been creative and love doing projects that challenge my skills and creativity.

2) How long have you been running Reflectives?

I started back in 1992, so that would be about 20 years. However, I have been doing framing for over 24 years and was certified back in 1996.

3) What is the vision behind Artisans Cove? What are your future goals?

Artisans Cove is where people and the artist community can connect and be inspired to creativity. I hope to develop different sites around the property so that we can continue to encourage art and learning in a sustainable manner.

4) What sort of services, projects, events, and exhibitions take place in Artisans Cove?

We offer conservation framing and minor restoration services as well as an eclectic art gallery. We also always have multiple ongoing projects and volunteers are welcome to help complete them. There is usually a monthly artist reception, and other events can vary. This spring and summer, we are sponsoring art festivals every second Saturday from April through August. For more information about any of our events, go to either one of our sites and click on "Events and Classes."

5) How can the community become more engaged with the arts?

Come out and view the artists' work, make constructive feedback, and support programs by taking classes or volunteering.

6) Do you have any advice for people who would like to work in the arts?

Work in the arts? Sorry, I thought we were playing. Seriously, the arts can be very difficult to get into at first. Not only do you have to have that unique perspective, but your marketing has to be on time. If you come into it to make money, then you need to be out of the arts. The most successful national artists I know had a fierce passion and an unfaltering focus for this work.

7) What do you like most about Huntsville's art scene? Is there anything you would change?

It's just starting! More participation by the artists to learn how to market and work with the community would be extremely beneficial.

Shakespeare Traveling Art Exhibit Visits Huntsville March 20-27

Art News from Jenny Lane, Huntsville Museum of Art's Communications Manager

Masterpieces Center Stage
Artistic Expressions Celebrating
25 Years of Shakespeare in Montgomery, Alabama

Huntsville, AL – The Alabama Shakespeare Festival will celebrate its Silver Anniversary Season in Montgomery this year. One of many activities planned to commemorate this memorable event is Masterpieces Center Stage: Artistic Expressions Celebrating 25 Years of Shakespeare in Montgomery, Alabama, a traveling art show composed of commissioned, original works of art depicting ASF and Shakespeare. The exhibition travels the entire state of Alabama, making its Huntsville debut in the Prozan Gallery of The Huntsville Museum of Art from March 20-27.

This arts trifecta—a partnership among the visual artists, the performing arts and art museums—began when Montgomery artist, David Braly, was approached to create a work of art in celebration of ASF’s 25th anniversary in Montgomery. As Alabama is blessed with many talented artists, the word went out to a selected group of painters and sculptors asking them to create paintings, drawings, sculpture, or mixed-media works that reflect the ASF plays, themes, Shakespeare characters, or the building and park. These works of art formed an exhibition that will travel the state, raising awareness about ASF and showcasing the talents of some of Alabama’s finest artists.

Masterpieces Center Stage will feature works from Evan Wilson, David Braly, Perry Austin, Barrett Bailey, Sloane Bibb, Cal Breed, Catherine Cabaniss, Gary Chapman, Clayton Colvin, Nan Cunningham, Dori DeCamillis, Susan Downing-White, Beverly B. Erdreich, Rebecca Tully Fulmer, Randy Gachet, Lucy Hunnicutt, John Kelley, Zdenko Krtic, Bruce Larsen, Mary Lynne Levy, Dale Lewis, Charlie Lucas, Coleman Mills, Randy Moberg, Nall, Paulette Riley, Conrad Ross, Mark Singer, Muir Stewart, Melissa B. Tubbs, Clark Walker, Hugh Williams, and Maralyn Wilson.

Masterpieces Center Stage began its tour in Anniston, the original home of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, at the Berman Museum. From Anniston, the show will travel to the Mobile Museum of Art, The Littlehouse Galleries in Birmingham, The Huntsville Museum of Art, and end its journey at The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival will auction off the artwork with the proceeds benefiting the theatre. For more information, please contact Lindsey Jinright, Masterpieces Center Stage Coordinator, at 334-271-5343 or ljinright@asf.net. and/or visit masterpieces.asf.net.

Huntsville Museum of Art: Two Fantastic Exhibitions Opening Sunday, March 13

Art News from Jenny Lane, Huntsville Museum of Art Communications Manager

Two Fantastic Exhibitions Opening Sunday, March 13

Looking at the Collection: Encounters Alumni

Huntsville’s Past: Through The Artist’s Eyes

Huntsville, AL – The Huntsville Museum of Art has added two stunning collections-based exhibitions to its line-up this year. On Sunday, March 13, the Museum will debut Looking at the Collection: Encounters Alumni, which will run through September 18, and Huntsville’s Past: Through the Artist’s Eyes, which will continue through May 1.

In 1986, an exciting new exhibition series debuted at the Museum. The series, titled Encounters, was conceived as a showcase that would feature the work of a regional contemporary artist presented in one gallery. Twenty-five years and sixty exhibitions later, Encounters is still going strong.

Encounters Alumni celebrates the legacy of this landmark series through a presentation of works in the Museum’s collection by many past Encounters artists. On view in the Chan Gallery, highlights include arresting paintings by Larry Walker and Mark Messersmith; engaging sculpture by Duane Paxson and Janice Kluge; evocative photographs by Sheila Hagler and Melissa Springer; and fine crafts by Dale Lewis and Clifton Pearson.

In the Haws gallery, the Museum displays some of its many historical works that give voice to Huntsville’s rich past in Huntsville's Past: Through the Artist's Eyes. Visitors will learn about aspects of the City’s fascinating history as documented by local and nationally recognized artists. Featured artists include William Frye, an itinerant painter known for portraits of the city’s early founders; Susan Keziah Hobbs, who stitched her Huntsville family history into a sumptuous crazy quilt; and social activist Lewis Hine, who photographed the very young laborers at Merrimack Mill. Who better to tell the story of Huntsville than the artists whose images bring its history alive?

I have been a graphic designer since 1988, and enjoy working directly with clients and business owners. My commercial work includes logo designs (some you probably recognize, like the Panoply logo, Concerts in the Park, Huntsville Ballet, Broadway Theatre League to name a few), websites, magazines, brochures, etc.

These days, I is spend a lot of time with the illustration side of my work, and I am very excited about having a studio in Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment, where I can have lots of room to work.

The subject and medium of my work varies. However, if I were to use one word to describe the overall style of my work it would be “Layered.” Whether I am sketching, painting digitally or creating collages and murals, my work tells a story. This results in a layered look, rich in texture, rhythm and balance.

Dance is a favorite subject, and I am thrilled to be creating the artwork for Huntsville Ballet Company which is the perfect stage for the dance art.

Faith, family and a really good cup of coffee are what keep this busy artist ticking!

My current body of work is fairly diverse ranging from a skateboarder in flight to a number of drawings which honor those in military service. My favorite subject is marine life as they seem to glide effortlessly through the cool water. I find these scenes very soothing.

I work primarily with oils and acrylics on canvas but also like pen & ink and pencil. Lately I have also worked on projects involving antique doors and a multi-dimensional mural.

I enjoy working alongside my colleagues at 16 Main Gallery in Madison and feel blessed to be a part of that community and environment. I believe I was given a gift to not only enjoy but to share.

Much of what I do is custom and includes portraits as well as paintings and drawings which capture special memories. Helping someone to provide a unique and special gift is an experience I love being a part of.
