Local artist Gökden Alpman-Matthews featured in the Huntsville Times

Artist proud of Turkish heritage

Thursday, December 16, 2010

HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Turkish-inspired ceramic sculptures are not an ordinary find in Huntsville.

But Lowe Mill artist and Istanbul native Gökden Alpman-Matthews is not in the business of just selling her exquisite and meticulously detailed creations.

Her vision is to educate and share with people the rich history and culture of Turkey, a country that’s often misinterpreted.

“I want people to learn of Turkey’s culture,” said 39-year-old Matthews. “It’s not east and not west. It’s a bridge with a strong history where Jews, Christians and Muslims live together.

“The culture is mixed, and I want people to understand and understand other people.”

Artist Scott Smith featured in the HSV Times

Making art beautiful again

Published: Monday, December 13, 2010

HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Scott Smith is an assemblist.

He gives industrial materials, obscure objects and what some folks may call junk a second chance to be sublime.

“It’s the idea of taking something apart without the intention of taking it apart,” said the Sandusky, Ohio, native who now teaches printmaking, two-dimensional design and art history at Alabama A&M University. “You fill it with your own decor and in the sense that you build it because you think it’s beautiful.

Downtown Huntsville gets a new art gallery

Downtown Huntsville gets a new art gallery

Thursday, December 09, 2010
HUNTSVILLE, AL. - A new art gallery is adding a dash of pizzazz to downtown Huntsville.
The California-based investment group San Francisco Residence Club and the 53-year-old Huntsville Art League cut the ribbon on the gallery Wednesday afternoon at 200 West Side Square, the old Central Bank Building.
Artist Peter Grant, the interim advisory board president of HAL, said the 1,800-square-foot space on the building’s first floor will help enhance downtown while providing more exposure to local artists.
“We are trying to make it an upscale gallery that will feature about 16 pieces of art ranging from acrylics to watercolors to sculpture by HAL artists,” Grant said. “HAL has 65 exhibiting artists; we will eventually rotate the artwork so that all artists have a piece on display.”

Huntsville Art League Artwork Exhibit at San Francisco Residence Club

Press Release

December 6, 2010

San Francisco Residence Club

Huntsville Art League

The Huntsville Art League and San Francisco Residence Club are honored to have the Honorable Tommy Battle, Mayor of Huntsville, welcome the Art League with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at 4:15 m on Wednesday December 8th. Please join us for a reception to follow.

San Francisco Residence Club, the new owner of the Old Central Bank Building, is pleased to announce their collaboration with the non-profit Huntsville Art League in opening an art gallery on the Square. The HAL will transform the vacant storefront at 200 West Side Square into a gallery featuring the work of local artists.

Anne O’Shea of SFRC first learned of the Huntsville Art League’s interest in a downtown location from Margaret Goldsmith. Mrs. O’Shea says “ We were delighted when we met with Peter Grant and found that the artists needed a place to display the work of local artists. We immediately offered them free use of our vacant storefront facing the square. They are pulling it together really quickly. We are really looking forward to the transformation of this corner of the Square..”

HAL is the oldest non-profit in HSV with 50 years of service to the Huntsville community. It was established in 1957 and was instrumental in transforming the dream of the Art museum into a reality. They provide art classes for all skill levels. They also frequently have receptions to introduce artists and their art to the community.

According to Peter Grant of Huntsville Art League, “At first we will display art in the windows which will give everyone on the Square an opportunity to see what our artists are doing. We will continue to fill the space until we have a gallery. We plan to have receptions and other events in this beautiful location.”

Watch the windows for more!
