2011 Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest Announced
Alabama artists are invited to enter the 2011 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp art contest, which opens January 1, 2011. The winning artwork will be used as the design of the 2012-2013 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp, which is required to be purchased when hunting migratory waterfowl. Entries will be accepted from Jan. 1 - Feb. 15, 2011. The competition is open to resident Alabama artists only.
All eligible entries will be on display February 25, 2011, at the Richard Beard Building, 1445 Federal Dr., Montgomery, Ala., 36107. Following the showing, three judges from the fields of art, ornithology and wildlife conservation will select the winning waterfowl art.
“We encourage all Alabama artists to participate in this unique contest,” said Corky Pugh, Director of the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF). “Like the federal waterfowl stamp, revenues from the sale of Alabama stamps are used to procure, establish or improve migratory waterfowl habitat.”
Only original horizontal artworks depicting a species of North American migratory duck or goose will be eligible. The wood duck, pintail, and American wigeon -- depicted in the winning artwork of three previous year’s contests -- are not eligible as the subject for the 2012-2013 Waterfowl Stamp. David Nix of Cottondale, Ala., won the 2010 contest with a painting of an American wigeon.
The judging criteria will emphasize uncluttered design suitable for printing as a stamp, anatomical accuracy of the illustrated species, and artistic rendering. Close attention must be given to tone and detail, since those aspects are prerequisites for printing artwork as a stamp. Wing and feather construction must be particularly well defined. Entries may be drawn or painted in any medium. Entries cannot exceed 9 by 12 inches (15 by 18 inches matted).
For contest information and entry forms visit the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website,www.outdooralabama.com, or contact contest coordinator David Hayden, at 334-242-3469.

Mark Your Calendar: Ascribing Artists Exhibit: All His Colors- 16 Main Art Gallery
You are Invited!
Ascribing Artists Exhibit:
All His Colors
16 Main Art Gallery, 16 Main Street, Madison, AL 35758 (256) 325-0161
Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.
Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point to the only ONE worthy of praise.
Ascribing Artists Exhibit: All His Colors on display throughout the month of January, 2011.

Huntsville Museum of Art Opens New Addition as Scheduled
Unlike metro jail, expanded Huntsville Museum of Art is on time, on budget
Steve Doyle, The Huntsville Times 11/14/2010
HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Huntsville leaders burned by the metro jail mess feel better about the city's latest public building project.
A 21,000-square-foot expansion of theHuntsville Museum of Art downtown is on track to be finished on time and, more importantly to taxpayers, close to the original $6.8 million construction estimate.
"We took this museum plan back to the architects two or three times to make sure it stayed within our budget," Mayor Tommy Battle said Wednesday. "The art museum board and our general services group stayed on it day in and day out to make sure we got the dollar value we should."

Spider Web Art Exhibit
Sarah Cure, The Huntsville Times HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Many artists use matte paper, clay, linen or some type of cotton fabric for their inimitable creations, but Anne Bradshaw Clopton tackled an unusual medium. She opted for an uncommon material that wasn’t appreciated mainly because it was a nuisance. It’s called gossamer, a more polite term for extremely fine spider silk. Featured Arts Community Leader: Walt Schumacher

Interview by Christina Wegman
This month, photographer and Huntsville Art League director Walt Schumacher has graciously taken the time to talk to the Huntsville Art Blog. To find out how to become involved with HAL please visit http://www.huntsvilleartleague.org or E-mail waltshoe@comcast.net. Also be sure to visit http://www.schumacherphotoart.com to view fine art photographs by Walt and his wife Janet!
1. How did you first become interested in the arts?
I bought my first camera 40 years ago. I got interested in printing photos, and eventually became a Professional Photo Lab manager. Later I took up teaching computers in high school and then became a computer technician. In the last 10 years, I started using the computer to make "Fine Art" prints at home. After doing art fairs for a few years, I joined HAL.
2. How long have you been affiliated with the Huntsville Art League?
About 6 years.
3. What are your day-to-day responsibilities at HAL?
I am "officially" expected to work 15 hours per week but it's usually double that, or more. There are no "daily" hours; and in order to get as much work as possible done, most of it is actually done at home, and on the phone, and via email. I am involved in just about every aspect of HAL. I attend meetings and receptions, oversee and usually chair our main shows of the year (Collector's Draw and Unique Views), and coordinate with the artists in just about every way. When necessary, I "officiate" at openings, become a "spokesman" on TV, etc. I create all our print advertising, from posters to billboards. I update the website, work shifts at the desk, restock paper towels, and take out the trash. I do "whatever it takes"
4. What do you enjoy most about your work (both in photography and working with HAL)?
HAL gives me an outlet to show my photography, when I get a chance to do something creative!! The best thing about HAL is that it becomes an extended family ... one with lots of creative relatives!
5. Do you have any advice for artists who are just starting out?
Beyond "practice, practice, practice”, to also get involved in a group like HAL because you form a network of creative folks who can encourage, teach, and inspire. Becoming an artist is a long journey, and it helps to have friends going the same way!
6. What are your goals for the Huntsville Art League? What should members of the community do to become more involved?
HAL is a "co-op" Gallery, FOR and BY the artists. Every year we would like to get more people involved, and grow ever larger. We are actually organized for the benefit of Tennessee Valley artists and the citizens of Huntsville. We would love for members of the community to become friends of HAL, visit us often, lend a hand when we do outside shows, and if possible, contribute financially to our cause (we ARE a tax-deductable non-profit!)
7. What do you like most about the Huntsville art scene? Would you like to see any changes? If so, why?
The "Huntsville Art Scene" is varied and vigorous. We're always discovering new artists in our midst. It is a very creative community! Our upcoming city-wide Gallery Tour is a good example of cooperation among art groups. The only thing I would like to improve is the awareness of the general community regarding what the arts have to offer. Spread the word!
