Heavenly Babies: Photographers capture brief life of infants
MADISON, AL - For the lifetime of his daughter, Joey Karr smiled into her eyes.
Then the infant, who couldn't overcome a fatal form of dwarfism, died in his wife's arms as their other three children patted their sister.
Photographer Kelly Clark Baugher caught that lifetime of love in photos now sacred with the weight of life and loss that the death of a baby brings.
Baugher is one of just four area professional photographers who volunteer their time at area hospitals to take beautiful pictures of heartbreakingly short-lived joy. She and photographer Mary Ellen Pollard, area coordinator, are part of the nationwide network of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a nonprofit organization based in Colorado that sends professional photographers, if the families request them, to quietly record their child's brief life.

Women of God Art Retreat

Art news from Ascribing Artist Anne Hamilton: [http://womenofgodartretreat.
The Grande O'l Lady is the new name I have given to the 1890's historical Victorian Home of which I am the caretaker - and it is only through the grace of God that I am able to do this. Living in the house has been a spiritual adventure, not only through the arts, but also through the guests who have spent time here. Many of these have been artists. This past week, during an art show held here by the Northeast Alabama Art Council, I was fortunate to play hostess to 11 artists who exhibited their works here. It was a success for the artists as well as those attending. Most of all, it inspired me to continue my journey with God in discovering how to better serve Him and others as the caretaker of this lovely old home. One of the things I have done as a result of this is to redesign my web site. To see the changes please visit http://womenofgodartretreat.

Heads up Alabama- Public Art: “Heads Up Alabama” is an effort to engage the public in discovery of this information through accessible public art.
- Twenty regional artists were chosen in May, 2010, through a juried competition to create art from a basic fiberglass head that is approximately three-feet tall.
- These artistic heads will be mounted atop a pedestal, creating an eye-catching and impressive piece over six feet in height.
- Attached to the pedestals will be information on a variety of health topics, written in simple language.
- The topics include psychological aspects of obesity and weight control; psychological components in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases (multiple sub-topics); stress and stress management; psychological benefits of exercise; the role of sleep in overall health; health benefits of forgiveness, etc.
- The Kickoff Event, where artists, the Heads, and sponsors will be introduced, will begin at the Birmingham Public Library, downtown location, July 22, 2010. After three weeks at the library, the Heads will then move to the Aldridge Botanical Gardens in Hoover, with a Trail of Heads across Jefferson county to follow in the fall of 2010.
- Plans are being made for the Heads to be scattered across Alabamacities, with the health information attached.

30th Panoply Arts Festival Application Deadline Nov. 5, 2010
September 10, 2010
Dear Artists,
We have been busy planning for the 30th Anniversary of Panoply Arts Festival. There are several changes for the 2011 Panoply Art Marketplace that we are excited about and we want to take a moment to share some of these changes with you.
· The dates have changed! Panoply will be held April 29 and 30 and May 1, 2011 in Big Spring International Park in downtown Huntsville which is one week later than the festival has taken place the last few years.
· The application deadline is earlier! Please note on the enclosed application that the deadline for submission is November 5, 2010. We will notify artists of their acceptance on December 6, 2010. We anticipate that this earlier timeline will make it easier for you to plan your spring show schedule and will allow us more opportunity to promote your work.
· Art Marketplace will have a new home in the park. Booths will be set up along a main portion of pavement that is in the heart of the park. This means tents will need to be weighted and not staked. This new location will give our visual arts a true marketplace feel and will allow maximum accessibility for festival-goers. Load-in and load-out will also be much easier.
· The Art Marketplace Judge Curtis Benzle will offer a free workshop for the Art Marketplace artists on Sunday, May 1 at 10:30 am in the Artist Hospitality area.
We look forward to receiving your application, and would be happy to assist you with any questions you may have. Please contact the Art Education & Community Outreach Manager Vicky Hinton in the Arts Council office at 256-519-2787 ex. 207 or VHinton@artshuntsville.org for additional information.
Sincerely,
Cathy Callaway & Jan Dorning

Hello Friends who appreciate the arts!
Article: Decatur gallery owner dead at 47- Scott Willis
Managing editor
When Cappie Phillips Tennant was planning her wedding in Durham, N.C., she regretted that she’d be too far away for family friend Scott Willis of Decatur to provide her floral decorations.
But Willis found a way, according to Laura Phillips, Tennant’s mother. He shared a ride with a friend to Durham and had flowers delivered there for him to combine with his creative touch, delighting the bride.
That devotion to people he knew and artistic talent were what friends remembered Friday after learning Willis had been discovered dead at his residence. He was 47.
“He silently gave so much of himself and his talent to so many,” said Phillips, executive director of the Carnegie Visual Arts Center. “He really was one of the most generous people you would ever know. He loved knowing what was going on in the community and who was doing what.”

Event: 54th Annual St. James Court Art Show
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Friday & Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday
Place: Louisville, Kentucky
Judy Bobula will be exhibiting in the 54th Annual St. James Court Art Show. Judy will join over 700 artists from throughout the United States to exhibit and sell her mixed media paintings at the event. The Saint James Court Art Show is set outdoors in the heart of Old Louisville’s Victorian-era district in Louisville, Kentucky. This year it will be held October 1, 2 & 3.
Judy comments that she is constantly looking for found items to add to her art. "Some people would call me a dumpster diver. While I have a general idea of where I am going, I mainly works intuitively and add the found items as I go along. Sometimes I am half way through a painting and find it isn't working. All is not lost. I have learned something and the piece can eventually be used somewhere else."
