Wanted: Presenters for the AL Arts Education Advocacy Summit

MAKING IT HAPPEN: Request for Presenters

Statewide Arts Education Summit 2010 -- October 6-8, 2010
Alabama’s statewide arts education advocacy summit will take place at the Hotel Capstone in Tuscaloosa, this October with a focus on “Making it Happen.” In January 2011 the Merce Cunningham Dance Company plans a legacy tour through Alabama. Cunningham, Cage and Rauschenberg were the first improvisational collaborators to create “Happenings” at Black Mountain College beginning in 1930, and even in the early ‘70’s, “Happenings” were still very much alive. A “Happening” was an arts event (improvisational, multi-disciplinary and non-linear) created by both performers and audience. Boundaries disappeared and the audience became part of the art. Often things were left to chance with no script or plot. “Happenings” developed on the spot.
Everything we are learning today in education research states that when the students are active learners, boundaries dissolve and everyone learns together. Students gain the skills they need for the future, and school culture becomes risk free, innovative and exciting. What better time to reengage the old “Happening” model for our Arts Education Summit!
We are looking for presenters willing to go out on a limb to offer “Happenings” that will engage us in advocacy for arts education. That advocacy should include excellent teaching in the arts both sequential and integrated; building awareness in communities through strong partnerships with schools, and building legislation in our government to create policy stating the arts are essential for every student. We encourage you to envision a “Happening” structured to encourage learning about what you have to offer. That structure should engage a community of learners attending our summit, and enhance their capacity building for our schools, our communities and/or our government.
Break Out Sessions will be 90 minutes. We need sessions on: how to integrate the arts, how to develop community partnerships, and how to influence policy makers. We need sessions on anything that enhances arts education, including technology, assessment, questioning, envisioning, strategic planning, networking, and more. We also need teaching artists to showcase their work. If you have an idea with the capacity to strengthen arts programs in Alabama – we want you!
Please send your proposals immediately to Diana Green at the Alabama State Council on the Arts. You may email proposals to diana.green@arts.alabama.gov. If you have questions or would like to brainstorm by phone, please call me at 334/242-4076 Ext. 241.
Proposals should include objective, planned activities or improvisational direction, and a creative element that uses lessons learned or discoveries made to culminate your session. You may send narratives or lesson plans. Choose your own format for your “Happening” proposal. We may need to call you, so include current contact information.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for all you do for Alabama’s students!!!!

HSV Times: Southerland's Photo

Southerland's Photo: Husband and wife have worked side by side for 42 years

Published: Tuesday, August 03, 2010, Mike Marshall, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Al. - More and more, it's unusual to find a couple who have been married for 42 years, much less work together that long.

"It's not hard," Malcolm Tarkington said. "She just does what I tell her."

"Yeah, right," Betsy Tarkington said. "No, that's not true."

Malcolm and Betsy Tarkington, married for 51 years, have worked side by side at Southerland's Photo since 1968.

Malcolm bought the store from Dave Southerland when it was at Dunnavant's Mall, Southerland's home from 1966-75.

Betsy did clerical work and waited on customers after Malcolm became the owner in January 1968.

Copyright and Trademark Issues- Daniel Moore

Artist Daniel Moore makes free expression stand

Published: Sunday, August 08, 2010 Mark McCarter, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Do you have "The Catch" on your wall? Or "Maximum Block?" Or "The Goal Line Stand?" Or any of the Daniel Moore prints that most self-respecting Alabama fans have?
Makes you feel even more an Alabama fan, right?

The University of Alabama might argue otherwise. It'd argue that instead of showing your loyalty, you're in cahoots with an artist who is profiting from illegal use of school colors and logo.
Moore has provided more good will and good memories for Tide fans than anyone not on the Alabama payroll.

But the university thinks it needs to be on Moore's payroll.

John "Jahni" Moore creates mural projects

Local teacher spearheads summer mural project

Published: Saturday, August 07, 2010
Sarah Cure, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Prometheus in classic Greek mythology was a Titan who famously stole fire from the almighty and powerful god of thunder, Zeus, to share and give to humankind.

For that benevolent act, Prometheus was chastised by Zeus and chained to a rock where he painfully awaited each day for an eagle to eat his liver.

Excluding the morbid act, John "Jahni" Moore - an art teacher at Butler High School - applies Prometheus' myth to his ideology of the arts.

"Most everyday people never step foot in a museum," said Moore, an Alabama A&M University alumnus, "so I want to take art out of the museums and galleries." "I want to put art in front of everyday people and share it with them like Prometheus."

Ascribing Artists exhibiting at the Church of the Nativity Aug. and Sept.

You are Invited!

Ascribing Artists Exhibit

Church of the Nativity, Banister Room, 208 Eustis Ave. SE, Huntsville, AL 35801

Exhibit on display Aug. and Sept. 2010. Mon. thru Thurs. 9 am to 4 pm, Fri. and Sun. 9 am to Noon. Closed Sat.

Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.

Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point to the only ONE worthy of praise.

Artists on exhibit: Vanessa Austin, Jane Blevins, Leslie Reid Brasher, Julie Ellsworth, Joe Fikes, Gina Hurst, Paul LaBathe, Johanna Littleton, Cynthia Massey Parsons, Jackie Segars, Russ Sexton, Doris Sisk, John Stout, Angela True and Lynn Weatherford

For more info visit www.AscribingArtists.blogspot.com or e-mail:AscribingArtists@gmail.com

Susie Garrett
Artist

Through my colored pencil drawings, I transform the harsh and cold qualities of urban structures into calmness and atmospheric beauty. Environmental issues important to me are addressed indirectly through the respectful manner in which these scenes are portrayed, void of its familiar companions of litter and disrepair. My realistic style is expressed through the use of repeating shapes, dramatic perspective, wide use of values, and the study of light and shadow.

Susie’s colored pencil piece, “Going Green - The Hologram Makeover”, was accepted into “Imagine Tomorrow” exhibit at The Huntsville Museum of Art. This exhibit runs through September 12, 2010. The Little Green Store on Monte Sano Blvd has a selection of her work for sale.

Contact Susie Garrett via email for a studio visit.

I have been Interested in and have worked with several different forms of art for most of my adult life from metal and wood sculptures to paintings. Since 2007 I have been able to devote much more time to my painting and I have really grown to enjoy being able to create using mainly bright lively acrylic colors on wood and canvas.

Artist’s Statement
Holly Morningstar

My art, no matter the medium, is at its core a self-portrait. The figures are in no way an accurate visual representation of me, but I am not interested in recreating things of this world that already have flesh. Instead, I bring my emotions or thoughts into the world by giving bones and breath, molding them from dusty daydreams or persistent nightmares. I decorate them with familiar images from mythology and pop culture that reinforce my initial intention for the sake of effective communication with my future self and potential audience. I enjoy defining abstractions of my heart with concrete imagery because it makes me feel like I am rescuing them from the abyss of mundane life where they will get lost in between my next Diet Pepsi, shower, and phone call.

I create art for the same reason many scrapbook, or take pictures. I never want to forget. I don’t want to forget what it means to be human, feel, and live. Art is essentially a means of self-expression for me, a way to reduce stress, and release love when I become overwhelmed. When I look at things I have created in the past, I can remember what I was feeling, what caused the emotion, the thought processes, etc. Each drawing or painting is an intricate part of me.

While they are personal, I try to make them universal enough that any given viewer can walk away with their version of the core emotion, leaving both of us feeling slightly comforted that someone else feels something similar.
