Benzle Sculpture Included in NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art
July 5, 2010--Huntsville, AL Two porcelain sculptures by Curtis Benzle have been acquired by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art for their permanent collection. The sculptures are in Mr. Benzle’s signature style of translucent porcelain and are constructed using his personal variation on the nerikomi, color inlay technique.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art announcement follows recent acquisitions by two other noteworthy museums; the Tucson (AZ) Museum of Art and the Crocker Museum of Art (Sacramento, CA). Writing about the Crocker acquisition in “Artletter”; Curator Diana Daniels states, “Benzle’s passion for the tactile qualities of clay results in remarkable forms with petal-fine walls”.
In commenting on the recent acquisitions Mr. Benzle comments, “My gratitude goes to the collectors. I pour my heart and soul out in the studio, but it is the serious collector who elevates my creations to national attention”. “The support of Sidney Swidler (Crocker), Dan Leach (Tucson) and Hope Yampol (Met) has been critical to my recognition as a significant artist”.
Curtis Benzle’s studio is in Huntsville, AL. Current work is available at the Sherrie Gallerie in Columbus, Ohio and can be seen online at sherriegallerie.com or benzleporcelain.com.

"Diagonon"by Sam Tumminello, copyright (from the current show: "Abstract Realities")
Sam Tumminello
Photographer and Print Maker
Huntsville, Alabama
Sam Tumminello is an award-winning photographer from Huntsville, Alabama. He is a four time past president of the Huntsville Photographic Society and has won every major award of the organization, including, two-time recipient of their Presidents Award and has the rank of Master in the Society.
His photographs have been published in several national publications includingAmerican Photographer magazine, and many Huntsville publications. In 1992 he received a Merit Award, from the show juror, retired Life magazine photographer Ed Clark, for his color dye transfer composition Une Marriage en Paris.
In 1991, his gelatin silver print composition Pierre’s Blossom was accepted by the juried exhibition show: “The Classic ClichĂ©, Southern Magnolia”; sponsored by the State of Alabama Council of the Arts.
In 1999, four of his color photographs were published in the Huntsville / Madison County Chamber of Commerce book: "Huntsville / Madison County: To the Edge of the Universe" by Towery Publishing. In 2010 one of his historical photographs depicting the 1968 dedication of the Huntsville-Madison County Airport was published in the book “Images of Aviation - Huntsville Air and Space”
In 2007 four of his photographs were included in the State of Alabama Arts Councilseries titled “ALABAMA ORIGINALS, in the exhibition: “A Sense of Place” honoring living Alabama artists for the YEAR OF ALABAMA ARTS.
Most recently he has been enthused about creating fine art prints with the Inchiostro Technique. “Inchiostro” is an art media process utilizing a digitized image, manipulated by the artist on an “electronic plate". The piece is transferred to paper using only black ink. After the print is examined by the artist it may be re-worked until a bon a' tier is produced for limited edition printings. The Inchiostro technique is more than printing an image on paper; it is, more importantly, a disciplined approach using the artist’s aesthetics and creative talents to produce the art piece on the “plate”. It is only after the plate is worked to the satisfaction of the artist that the precision printing begins. Basically it is a disciplined approach to ink-jet printing.
Currently he’s has pieces in thee local shows:
"Sanctuary Artists: The Art of Nature" at the UAHuntsville Salmon Gallery through July 25th featuring his Inchiostro’s.
Imagine Tomorrow, juried show at the Huntsville Museum of Art, featuring a color giclee: “Clone Considering Clone”, through September 12, 2010.
Abstract Realties – Abstract Views of Real Subjects A solo exhibit of sixteen Inchiostro prints, presented by the Huntsville Art League, at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library Auditorium, through July 2010.
Also he continues to show a “featured print” at the Olde Towne Coffee Shoppe located at Five Points in Huntsville. Currently showing “Silent Statement” a portrait of a Panoply mime.
I work diligently at the craft of photography and printmaking and believe the title of artist is earned by diligence, persistence and knowledgeable execution of the craft.
I’m enthused to work with grayscale (also known as black and white or monochromic) prints. I prefer to consider subjects without hues to seek and distill the essence of the subject with varying shades of gray.
I’ve always had a fascination with light and dark aspects, or “chiaroscuro” of subjects and I strive to critically record the elements. This recorded image then becomes a “plate” I rework and refine to produce the fine art print. To paraphrase famous photographer Ansel Adams – if the image is the score the print is the performance. I strive for an excellent performance.
I want to evoke meaningful responses and emotions from the viewer – so they may consider what I considered. Visual art is collaboration between the artist and the person who appreciates the art piece.
Education
I’m self-taught, and I continue to study books and magazines about new processes and techniques as well as critically studying photographs of the masters. Through the years I have associated with and been influenced by such professionals as: Jack Dempsey, Barry Jackson, Monica Martin, Dennis Keim, and Leon Kennamer.
I’m a thirty-eight year member of the Huntsville Photographic Society and continue to participate. I’ve gained much photographic knowledge and experience in the organization; I like to think of it as “Education Through Association”. I encourage anyone with an interest in the art or science of photography to join us.
I’m also proud to be an exhibiting member of the Huntsville Art League. I think if you’d like to be influenced by artists, associate with them. It also affords me an excellent opportunity to show my pictures; they may be seen in the special “Visions Gallery”

It still surprises me when I hear folks refer to me as an artist. I’ve never thought of myself in those terms. Husband, father, granddad, friend, even physicist. Those are components of my identity that make more sense to me. But artist? I just keep my eyes open to see the beauty that surrounds us, particularly the things in nature that my Creator has made. I’ve never ceased to be astonished by His creativity, intellect, craftsmanship, and most of all, His deep, deep mercy and love. I also enjoy photographing things that people have made… machinery, architecture, and gizmos – from simple, hand-made things all the way up to high-tech things. And I appreciate folks who plant trees or put flowers in their windows or gardens. The beauty they add to their own lives spills over to all the rest of us.
My strongest contribution to the process of making good images is an obsession with technique. It might sound like an overstatement, but it's a big deal to get a subject focused properly or to freeze the motion of cherry blossoms blowing in a spring breeze. Not everyone can do it. I try to expose my images correctly. And I try to frame them well, perhaps from a fresh vantage point. I try to watch out for my backgrounds. And I look for surprises.
I’ve been playing with photography in a serious way for about 42 years, always as a hobby, never as a profession.
Currently, I am exhibiting at the Madison County Main Library in Huntsville from July through August. Most of the images in this exhibit were taken within the last few years using Canon digital SLR cameras.
I hope you will attend exhibit! My best wishes to you.
