Betty Burchfield's Treasured Reflections

Now, this was a real challenge! This young lady is the granddaughter of one of my customers in Holland. Rose Marie, sent me this photo of Bronte' eating ice cream. Wow, I had to call on God for this one. Guess that proves with God's help, we can do all things!!!!

Changes made:
Cropped the ice cream and spoon out.
Moved face over more to the center.
Redirected some of the hair on the forehead away from eye.
Added sweater on the left side (as you face it).
New Background.
Added more highlights to hair.
Took away shadows under her eyes.
Painted some attractive eyelashes on this sweet young lady.
YOU'D NEVER KNOW SHE WAS EATING ICE CREAM! WHAT FUN MAKING AN OIL PAINTING USING A PLAIN OLE PHOTOGRAPH.

A great fascination with different- colored clays and the textures that can be produced with stoneware has led me to experiment with and study clays for the past thirty years.

I was born and grew up in Mexico City, a place with strong cultural ties and great tradition, full of sights, energy, sounds and flavor.

Bringing together my Mexican heritage with the richness and tranquility of the Deep South has enriched my life. This constantly moves my work toward blending the two cultures.

Continuous respect for the material is a factor I try to maintain in my work. I also have a great reverence for the idea of “craftsmanship” and it is an strong element when creating my work. My work has developed from the respect I have for clay and the joy I experience when working with it.

1950 Buick Roadmaster Woody with flames and surfboards by Richard White

Please enjoy the image of my most recent ceramic sculpture - her name is "Jennifer" and she is a 1950 Buick Roadmaster Woody with flames and surfboards. It is pre-professionally photographed (I took the digital image myself). I was so pleased with the bold color and strong image that I just had to share it with you. I think the chrome makes it pop right into human space! I decided to make it into a mixed media piece since I could not paint under the surfboards on the roof once they became a part of the fired ceramic piece. So, the surfboards are made of poplar and walnut, the car-top rack is oak. It will be shown on my website (www.DrawToLive.com) after Doug Brewster (http://www.brewsterphotography.com/) has professionally photographed it this coming week.

Isn't it awesome! Wow! I am so pleased!

Thank you for the opportunity to share it with you!

Take care,
J. Richard White, Jr.

Richard White's newest creation: 1952 Willys CJ2A Jeep

Just a quick visual funny I thought you would enjoy seeing. I just completed it a little over an hour ago. Isn't it hilarious! It's a 1952 Willys CJ2A Jeep - or an adapted customized version. It only took 12 hours to make, minus the glazing and firing processes yet to come.

Please enjoy this image - I hope it puts a smile on your face!

Take care,
J. Richard White, Jr.

Guadalupe Robinson 's Pottery Featured in Art Exhibition

Guadalupe Robinson using indigenous clay from the Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary created the pot called “Nesting”. To illustrate her process, she also exhibits some of the un-processed clay and several test firings. She is one of the artists in the exhibition.

Nature has been a powerful driver of creativity since the earliest known art made by humans in Paleolithic caves. Two exhibitions presented by the Department of Art and Art History, UAHuntsville present vibrant examples of what happens when contemporary artists explore nature and reflect their surroundings in varied media.

The group exhibition The Sanctuary Artists: The Art of Nature is in the Salmon Library Gallery, while the solo show Clayton Bass: The Poetry of Wildness is in the Wilson Hall Gallery, both continue through July 25.

In the multi-declined group exhibition, the Sanctuary Artists provides their unique interpretations of the amazing Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary. Participating artists include: Clayton Bass - painter; Robert Bean - painter; Jerry Brown - painter; Drucilla Esslinger - archivist; Sara Beth Fair - painter; Margaret Anne Goldsmith - philanthropist, naturalist; Dee Burt Holmes - painter, printmaker; Blake Hudson - videographer; Marian Lewis– photographer, naturalist; Maggie Little - artist; Larry Long - archivist; Sara McDaris - author/storyteller; Jim Poff - photographer; Guadalupe Robinson - potter; Jimmy Robinson - poet; Sam Tumminello - photographer, printmaker and Katrina Weber – painter.

Clayton Bass

A North Carolina native, Clayton Bass has shown professionally for 26 years.

Represented by galleries in Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee, his work is included in private, corporate, university, and museum collections in seven states. Five works are on permanent display at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel. The Energen Corporation recently purchased a major work for its headquarters in Birmingham. In 2000 his first New York solo exhibition opened at Space 504 Gallery on Broadway.

In 1991 he began incorporating realistic elements into his abstract two and three dimensional works. Since 2006, realism is his primary focus as seen in The Flint River Series, Sanctuary Series, Dawn and Dusk, Nature’s Gifts, and The Dreaming Pool, inspired by the lush landscapes of the southeast U.S. Throughout his career, nature has informed his paintings, works on paper, and sculptural pieces. The interplay of dramatic light and shadow is a recurring motif in his landscape, and still life works. In 2009, he co-founded the Sanctuary Artists, an interdisciplinary group who share their artistic, literary, and scientific works inspired by the Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Huntsville.

Several solo and group exhibitions are on view or upcoming for 2010 and 2011, in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.
