Colorful lights will 'enhance' downtown Huntsville power substation
September 23, 2009, 4:30PM

What will this downtown substation look like in red? Big Spring Partners and Theatrical Lighting Systems will light up the station this weekend.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Big Spring Partners, the downtown development group, has contracted Theatrical Lighting Systems for $2,500 to color the power substation in red, blue and green lights in the hopes of beautifying Huntsville.

Staring Thursday night, that big, ugly power substation located near the corner of the Heart of Huntsville Drive and Monroe Street will be made beautiful thanks to colored lights.

"We're always looking for enhancements for downtown," said Big Spring Partners president Mary Jane Caylor.

Update on HSV Museum of Art Expansion

Museum bids $1M under budget

Times Arts Writer jon.busdeker@htimes.com

EMJ gets $5.4M job; work may begin by end of next month

After re-bids, redesigns and a bit of rethinking, the Huntsville Museum of Art's long-awaited expansion may begin construction by the end of October.

On Thursday, bids for the project came in more than $1 million under budget during a bid opening at City Hall. EMJ will build the expansion for $5.4 million.

"I think we have a winner," said City of Huntsville Facilities Project manager Chris O'Neil.

Based in Chattanooga, EMJ built the Frank Gehry-inspired addition of the Hunter Museum of Art in downtown Chattanooga and Parkway Place mall in Huntsville.

In October, the expansion plans will go before the City Council for final approval. If approved, construction may begin in late October or early November, O'Neil said. EMJ has one year to complete the expansion. Once finished, the new wing will allow the museum to display much more of its Sellars Collection, which went on exhibition earlier this week. The collection includes more than 400 works of art by American women.

HSV Times: The Dragon Fly Gallery Exhibit to help Cancer

Step ahead in something red for benefit exhibition

Sunday, September 20, 2009
Huntsville Times

The love affair with women and footwear is written in our soles, so it's fitting that the first "Nothing Heels the Blues like a Pair of Red Shoes" art exhibition is exclusively feminine. The show, featuring artists who have been touched by cancer, launches at The DragonFly Gallery in Fayetteville, Tenn., on Friday form 5 to 8 p.m.

Thirty percent of all proceeds will help purchase a digital mammography machine for the Lincoln Medical Center. The show will run through Nov. 6.

American women's paintings, sculpture represent 90 years

David Stewart is thrilled. An art history professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, he will no longer have to send his students out of town to see stellar examples of major American art movements.

And because the artists are American women, people will come here to see the Huntsville Museum of Art's new acquisition - Art by American Women: The Sellars Collection - pieces of which went on view Sunday. The exhibit of more than 90 works will be on display through Nov. 8.

"It's definite that people are going to come to Huntsville to see this," said Stewart as he congratulated museum curator Peter Baldaia on the exhibit.

More than 100 people came to hear Baldaia discuss the museum's acquisition of the more than 400 works of art that span a period from the mid-19th century to 1940. The works cover many major art movements of the 90-year period.

HERE ARE SOME FUN 'ART' FACTS

Did You Know... ????

--The first ‘paints’ were made from ground earth & minerals. These paints or “pigments” were ground into powder and mixed with oil, egg or water to form paint.

--A "tesellation" is a design made from shapes that fit together perfectly. For example a chessboard is a simple tessellation made of squares.

--The Statue of Liberty is the largest hammered copper sculpture in the world.

--Most artists are left handed

--Although this famous artist is known as Pablo Picasso, his full name was 'Pablito Diego Jose Santiago Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Crispin Crispiniano de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz Blasco y Picasso Lopez'

Art news about: Academy of Internationally Enabled Artists

'Joy will be our goal' at studio
Saturday, September 19, 2009
Huntsville Times

The leap of faith Carole Esk'ridge is taking astounds even her, and she is a woman of unbelievable faith.

At the end of the month, Esk'ridge is leaving the historic Russel Erskine, the former hotel that's now an apartment building for the elderly and disabled, which has been her home for 22 years.

She's selling or giving away her possessions, and the 62-year-old is going to live with a family in Hanceville. There she plans to open the Academy of Internationally Enabled Artists for creative types like her who struggle with mental illness: "Joy," she said, "will be our goal."

Esk'ridge said she has a spot in mind for the academy near the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and it will be part home, part refuge and part art studio.

"It will be a place where those who can't do certain normal functions can live in hope, surrounded by a loving atmosphere, with healthy food and a clean environment," she said. "A place where the whole person - mind, body, soul and personality - will be cared for with love and desire to understand the needs of each artist.

"It will be a convent, almost, but for lay people."

She's not certain how she'll fund this academy.

"God will provide," she said. "It sounds strange in this day and age, but I believe in God, and I believe He answers prayers.

Robert Schuffert's "Scenic Tennessee" photo book is scheduled to be on book stands Sept. 27th

From Photographer Robert Schuffert

From: "Robert Schuffert" <reschuff@knology.net>
Subject: Scenic Tennessee

Hi,
I just wanted to let everyone know that Scenic Tennessee is scheduled to arrive here on September 27th. It's been a long wait and I'm anxious for them to arrive! I'll be busy for the next few months trying to get them into stores and parks across Tennessee and North Alabama. I'm also trying to set up presentations about the books in both states. I already have a few scheduled with the Tennessee Trails Association (thanks Bob!). If you know clubs, organizations, senior centers or other groups that might be interested in a speaker for an evening, let them know I'll be available for scheduling soon. Since I'm also working full time now, presentations must be in the evenings or on weekends.
Next January, I'll be in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee giving three presentations during Wildlife Wilderness Week. I participated in the event this past January and had a great time. It is a week full of classes, presentations, hikes and even a photography contest. All events during the week are free of charge and it's a great place to learn more about wildlife, the Smoky Mountain National Park and Tennessee. For more info on WWW, point your web browser to http://www.mypigeonforge.com/events_winterfest_wilderness.aspx. Click onExhibitor Class Listing near the top-center of the page for the class listings. I am scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, but they don't have me listed here for Friday yet, I'll have to call and find out why.

Thanks,
Robert

Master Artist Makes His Mark in Alabama

Curtis Benzle, Huntsville, is featured in the publication; "Masters: Porcelain", a survey of the premier artists working in porcelain worldwide.  Of the forty international artists included in the survey, only Sunkoo Yuh of Athens, GA, and Mr. Benzle represent the Southeast region of the U.S.

Curator Richard Burkett invited artists from around the glode to contribute to this, the first in a major new series featuring the top artists in varying media from Lark Books.  Burkett's choices condense these artist's achievements to a relative handful of remarkable pieces—something of a mini-retrospective in print-yet they masterfully illustrate what is unique and worthy of study with each artist.

Not quite like any other material, porcelain in the right hands is capable of being awesomely delicate as well as expressively forceful.  In the 18th century, porcelain attracted the admiration and greed of alchemists and princes.  Today, for many, that age-old mystique still clings to this unusual and notoriously difficult clay.

Mr. Benzle has maintained his studio in Huntsville, AL since 2002 and recently completed an solo exhibition at the Sherrie Gallerie in Columbus, Ohio.  Additional information and images of Mr. Benzle's work are available online at http://www.benzleporcelain.com

Marilyn Scharfenberg- Artisan appreciates old-fashioned crafts, self-sufficiency

Her jewelry creations are a cut above

Artisan appreciates old-fashioned crafts, self-sufficiency

Marilyn Scharfenberg searched for a sense of accomplishment after retiring in 2001. She started making jewelry and later founded Inspired Creations.

She offers handmade, custom bridal and vintage jewelry. "It's always fun to re-purpose, revamp and create something new from something that already exists," Scharfenberg said. "I love looking for vintage beads at estate and rummage sales. It's wonderful to harvest pieces to bring back to life."

Scharfenberg likes the classic "aged look" these components give her jewelry.

Her specialty is one-of-a-kind gemstone or semi-precious necklace and earring sets. While many items are delicate and loaded with crystals, her jewelry tends to be more "big and bulky."

She frequently uses natural stones in her work. Sterling, gemstones, semi-precious stones and Swarovski crystals are a mainstay for Inspired Creations.

News Article: ART ON THE SQUARE

Art to have its day on Athens square

Wednesday, September 09, 2009
By Victoria Cumbow
Times Staff Writer victoria.cumbow@htimes.com

Event set for Saturday (9/12/09) promises lots of choices for visitors to see, buy

Downtown Athens will be bustling with people Saturday as the Duck Run 5K and Art on the Square take over a few blocks.

More than 55 artists will be featured this year during the art event. Diane Lehr, Art on the Square board member, said applicants doubled this year. The board brought in independent art professors to choose which artists will be showcased.

"We hired an independent panel from the region," Lehr said. "They have nothing to do with our board."

She said by doing this, it gives a more varied choice of artists for spectators to see.

The day "is totally dedicated to art," Lehr said. "Everything from painting to throwing clay on the wheel to beaded necklaces."

Artist, Nancy Bradford featured in Huntsville Times: Scottsboro's Art Sunday

Scottsboro days still special

Monday, September 07, 2009

Times Staff Writer david.brewer@htimes.com

Crowd smaller but Art Sunday sales pleasing to painter

SCOTTSBORO - The economic recession and threat of rain probably contributed to the smaller crowds over the Labor Day weekend than they're used to seeing at Scottsboro's Art Sunday in Caldwell Park and the First Monday Trade Day on the courthouse square.

But local artist Nancy Bradford said her paintings were selling as well as they had in the last two Art Sunday exhibitions.

"I haven't seen any difference," she said. "It's been wonderful for me."

Soon after Art Sunday opened at 8 a.m., she sold a large oil painting titled "Le Tournesols" ("The Sunflowers") for $1,500.

A former art teacher in the Birmingham, Homewood and Huntsville school systems, Bradford said painting has been her passion since her parents took her to an art museum in Chicago when she was 12. She has been active in the Huntsville Art League and has traveled to Europe where she studied art in Tuscany and in France's Bordeaux wine country. Paintings such as "Venetian Light," "On Boulevard St. Germain, Paris," and "Garden Gate, St. Jean De Cole, France" are among her many works that reflect her travels and experiences abroad.

Several of her works on display Sunday also included pastels and watercolors. Asked which is her favorite medium to work with, she said that would be like asking which one of her three sons she loves the most. "I love them all," she said.

There are moments in every person's life that inspires an artist to create. Whether it's something as simple as a tree blowing in the wind or as wonderfully complex as the birth of a child, all these defining moments, good and bad, inspire.

I am an oil and acrylic artist from McCarley, MS now based in Tuscumbia, AL. I am a self-taught artist concentrating on abstract, landscape, wildlife, and Christian subject matter among others. My artwork illustrates a variety of vibrant colors using traditional themes with a contemporary twist. I do not limit myself to a particular style or theme but paint what God puts on my heart.

I am also the designer of a unique line of handmade jewelry, called Eddie-Alice Jewelry, which is featured at Coldwater Books in Tuscumbia, AL. Eddie –Alice Jewelry is centered around colorful mussel shells gathered from the banks of our beautiful Tennessee River. FEATURED ARTIST CHRISTA SMITH

A little bit about me!

My name is Christa Smith. I was born in Pirmasens, Germany.

As a child, I always liked to draw, paint and decorate. My Mom sold my paintings at her little store. Later, I became a department store window and interior decorator, putting to use my talents in creating and designing.

After marrying an American and moving to the USA to raise a family, I was able to use my creative skills in other fields of employment, working mainly during school hours.

Since I've been blessed with grandchildren, I have had the wonderful pleasure of painting wall murals in their bedrooms. This experience has lead to other opportunities to paint murals in commercial spaces, such as, a doctor's office, church, and day spa. Besides painting murals I like to paint on canvas too.

Now in my retirement age, I find more time to develop my painting skills to a higher level. As I observe the shadows and light affects on what I see, it inspires me to transfer the impression to canvas or paper using vivid colors. I like to paint with acrylics and watercolor.

In the past I had tried some portraits in pencil and would like to explore that field in the future as well.

God gave me the talent to paint and I want to use it to bring Him glory and thanks for His grace and blessings on me and my family. I find peace and solitude in God's creation of nature all around me.
