Congratulations to David Edwards!

Good news and sad news....

David Edwards will be leaving The Arts Council... that is the sad news....

The GOOD news is, starting this Tuesday, David will be the manager of Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment!

Congratulations!

David will continue to be a part of TAC coordinating the next shows at Sam & Greg’s and art@TAC, and helping with the first run of ArtVentures! Day Camp as well as volunteering and participating in future TAC events.

David notes "The Arts Council has been the best job I’ve ever had so far and Lowe Mill promises to be just as good. The only thing better would be for me to have my own studio and be a full time artist and/or the slim chance of becoming a professor."

If you have ever worked with David, you will know that he is a big supporter of the arts in our community and promotes our local artists. This move will give him more opportunities for expanding the arts in our growing town.

If you have any questions, suggestions or praises, please contact David at davespottery@gmail.com. (personal e-mail until he gets his work e-mail established)

Again, CONGRATULATIONS David!!

Historical and Architectural Question about First Baptist Church

"Jesus Mosaic" by Gordon Smith, Photo: Eric Shindelbower

We had a question submitted to the art blog from MB: "I have a question rather than a post. I was recently in Huntsville, doing some research at the library. I am a historian and architectural historian. I was struck by the First Baptist Church. Do you know how I can find out who designed it. Web searches have come up empty. Thanks!"

This is what we found on the church's website:

Building Information

Have you ever wondered why the building of Huntsville's First Baptist Church is designed the way it is? There is a wonderful meaning behind the design of the church that was rebuilt in the 1960's.

Artist, Betty Burchfield: "Sleep Little Babies"

From Artist, Betty Burchfield:

This painting is taken from the photo below. What a memory to capture! This is my granddaughter, Josee, and golden retriever puppy, "Lucky".

"Sleep Little Babies" by Betty Burchfield, copyright

This little one, Josee, was on a pallet on the floor taking a nap. "Lucky" was wide awake and I was hesitant to put the puppy beside Josee. When I put him down nex to her, that little puppy just snuggled right in and went to sleep.

study photo for painting "Sleep Little Babies"

Just one of those special memories that says to me...."I must make a painting of this." That is why I like to paint using someone's favorite photo. I can capture the picture in oils that will last forever.

Josee is now four years old and is "Grandmother Goose's" model for other paintings.

God is so good to give me the talent of being an artist. My reward is making people happy. That is my gift back to Him.

Harvest teen designs library card for peers

Harvest teen designs library card for peers

Colorful alternative part of promotion for summer reading

A colorful new public library card should appeal to teens because isn't the "cutesy worm" on kids' cards or the "mottled brown stack of books" picture everyone else gets, the new card's teen designer says.

"I go to the library a lot," said 13-year-old Aubrey Gonzalez of Harvest, "and I've always been disappointed that there's never been a teen card."

Gonzalez's card features a colorful collage spelling out the word "read" on a black background.

The Color Pink

Pink Plumeria (Photograph) by Dana Edmunds

The color pink can bring a fresh, soft look to a room. (Think rose petals with dew drops.) As it is a pastel, it is generally soothing and often carries loving and nurturing connotations. But don't be fooled - pink can also be punchy! www.Printscapes.com.

From Mellissa Meeks:

Hi Everyone!
I wanted to personally extend an invitation to each of you to please come out and participate in our Dedication of Murals Ceremony, with the Huntsville Stars, at the Joe Davis Stadium! We are all so excited and thrilled that we have completed the first phase of our Murals to Promote Community Awareness (MPCA) project. ...and thanks to alot of hard work, determination, belief in what we were trying to accomplish and people like Buck Rogers and Babs, Huntsville Stars Manager, and his wife, that supported us the whole way, we have brought four murals to life by the hands of all of our wonderfully talented artists that donated their time to breath life into the project!!! We are pleased to be able to present these murals to their non-profit organizations tomorrow evening, Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at 6:15 P.M. If you can attend, please meet us on the field, where we will be conducting the ceremony from home plate...

I hope all of you can make it... We will be launching the second phase by the end of May for five additional murals with four more pending...and will be welcoming aboard several new muralist/artists! We are so proud to be bringing such a community art event to Huntsville! And have plans underway to work several big mural projects with VBCC and downtown Huntsville...

Update on the Huntsville Museum Expansion

Museum project back on, minus deck

Thursday, May 14, 2009
By STEVE DOYLE
Times Staff Writer steve.doyle@htimes.com

City today likely to OK redesign for $6.8 million

A planned expansion of the Huntsville Museum of Art, delayed by soaring construction prices last year, is back on track - with key changes.

Tonight the Huntsville City Council is expected to approve a contract with Fuqua & Partners Architects to design a less expensive addition to the museum in Big Spring International Park.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 308 Fountain Circle.

Joe Fuqua, lead architect for the museum redesign, said a proposed 73-space parking deck topped by a sculpture garden is being eliminated to save money. Instead, a 40-space surface parking lot would be built near Williams Avenue and Church Street, he said.

Also, 21,000 square feet of new gallery, auditorium and special-events space is being shifted from the south side facing Williams mostly to the back of the museum.

24 art students' ideas combined to create picture

The Athens Middle School Talented and Gifted Art Class painted a mural on the Forrest Street railroad underpass last Saturday morning.

Earlier this year, the eighth-grade Talented and Gifted Art Class students each created their own version of what they'd like to see painted.

Art teacher Jennifer Rosso combined all 24 students' work to create the final design, then presented it to Mayor Dan Williams and members of the Athens Beautification Board. Williams approved the design, and the students started the mural on May 2.

Robin Wade Furniture

Robin Wade designs and builds hand crafted free edge furniture in Florence, AL.

By Bernie Delinski TimesDaily.com

"In nature, nothing is perfect," Wade said. "There's nothing squared up.

"Most people, when they make furniture, if they notice a crack, they cut it out. I look for something with that crack."
He looks for fallen trees, and knows some loggers who notify him when they are cutting.
From there, it's a lengthy process. Wade will allow the lumber years to dry out for the work.
"The lumber I'm buying now would make furniture for 2011," he said.
He considers his work to be a combination of furniture, art and a tribute to nature.

Artist, Andrea Pope

"I am from Huntsville, Alabama and I love to paint. Over the years I have painted on just about anything from furniture to old windows. Currently, my favorite thing to paint are windows. The neat thing is that I am recycling them sort of going 'green'. "
