The Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Artist Fellowships and Fellowship in Arts Administration Program. The application deadline is Monday, March 2, 2009.

Council's Fellowships provide direct assistance to Alabama artists and arts administrators across a range of disciplines, to recognize exceptional work and to support further development of their talents. Fellowships give individuals the financial ability to hone and deepen their craft. The program supports artists and administrators in all career stages, including emerging and mid-career as well as well established artists and administrators. These highly competitive awards also provide artists and administrators with recognition and affirmation from their peers and the public.

The Council awards Fellowships of $5,000 for artists and arts administrators working in crafts, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theatre and visual arts. The program does not provide funding for academic study in pursuit of a college degree. An applicant must be a legal residence of Alabama who has lived in the state for two years prior to the application deadline.

For additional information and submission requirements, interested applicants should review the guidelines available on the Council's web site at www.arts.alabama.gov.

Artist Alan Derrick to Create Sculpture for Quail Conservation

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (January 9, 2009) – Fine art sculptor, Alan Derrick has teamed with Quail Unlimited to raise money for wild bird conservation. A one-of-a-kind sculpture entitled “Nature’s Camo” depicting a bobwhite quail feather is being created to be auctioned with proceeds benefiting quail conservation.
Quail Unlimited is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to the wise use and management of America’s wild quail, doves, upland game birds and other forms of wildlife. “We welcome Alan as a conservation partner and anxiously anticipate the results of the upcoming auction,” said Donnie Buckland, QU Senior Vice President. “We appreciate Alan selecting Quail Unlimited as one of the organizations to benefit from his commitment to charitable organizations.”
"After a recent trip to Brazil, I came home with a renewed desire to support a few of the many organizations who are responsible for the preservation of the birding population,” commented Alan Derrick. “Without the efforts of organizations like Quail Unlimited, many of our bird populations would soon be extinct.” “My work is a commemorative testimony to these great causes that insure the natural beauty of the common bird feather.”
The non-reserve auction will be held online on eBay, listed under “Art, Direct from Artist, Sculptures” ending on April 5th at 9:00pm EST. The auction will begin seven days prior to the deadline.
About Alan Derrick
Sculptor, Alan Derrick specializes in one-of-a-kind fine art metal sculptures inspired by the common bird feather. His unique three-dimensional creations range in sizes from tabletop pieces to large corporate lobby installations. For more information, visit www.derrick.com.
About Quail Unlimited
Quail Unlimited is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the restoration of habitat for wild quail and upland wildlife. Its almost 300 chapters nationwide raise local project dollars for on-the-ground projects, including private and public land management with banquets, auctions, sporting clay events and more. QU has a highly trained staff of biologists, state and regional directors and dedicated members that work with private landowners and state and federal agencies to restore quail and upland game populations. In the last 5 years, Quail Unlimited chapters and partners invested over $23.3 million dollars in quail and upland game habitat expenditures and improvements. For more information, visit www.qu.org.

How to Turn a Crotch Bowl

Here, the almost completed bowl is still mounted on the headstock of the lathe.

Often considered worthless, even for use for firewood, gnarly wood from crotches, or forks in tree trunks, has an interesting and unique grain. Even though the stumps of hardwood trees like Maple and Cherry are sought after for turning burl veneers, the crotches of these same trees do not yield enough material to be useful. Turning a bowl on a wood lathe with this unique wood, however, can be a worthwhile, if challenging, project.

A Photo To Paint- Launches as a resource to Artists

News Release

Contact: Marie K. Thompson
marie@tommythompsonart.com

Date: January 9, 2009

Oil Artist, Tommy Thompson, Launches a New Web Site for Fellow Artists at www.APhototoPaint.com

After traveling to paint for more than 6 years, oil painter, Tommy Thompson, now has a treasure trove of thousands of digital photographs. At the urging of several elderly painters who are not able to paint on location and hobby painters with limited photographic experience and time for traveling, the painter has now developed an easily searchable web site for all artists at www.aphototopaint.com. Other artists can now benefit from not only Thompson's extensive training in painting but also his professional photographic training and experience.

As he shot his photos, Thompson composed them with future paintings in mind. For some of the photos, he offers artists more than one choice--one that has been enhanced according to color saturation, hue, brightness and contrast and another choice as the photo came directly from the camera.

Thompson is now offering 10-inch, 300-dpi versions of these photos at $10 each for purchase by other artists. Anyone who purchases a photograph will receive a license to paint from the photo. He has categorized his photos according to such subjects as landscapes, flowers, barns, figures, cows, birds, cats, dogs, clouds, churches, hay bales, gardens, rivers and creeks, architecture, and location, etc. He shot the digital photos in Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wyoming, plus Canada. Thompson invites all artists to check out his new web site at www.aphototopaint.com. A free 10-inch 300 dpi photo of an image is available on the web site's front page. More photos are being added to the web site almost every day.

Thompson prefers to paint en plein air but sometimes the weather does not cooperate. Even the renowned painter, Richard Schmid, acknowledges that sometimes an artist must resort to painting from digital photographs on a computer monitor as he illustrates on his video, "White Pine." To see Thompson's painting web site, check out www.tommythompsonart.com

Panoply T-Shirt and Poster Design- Extension

We need your help in designing our 2009 Panoply T-shirt. The theme this year is Art is a Blast. We'd like the image to include something of a space theme as well as incorporating all the arts. The new deadline for the design is January 30th. We can even do full color on this one, though an economical design would be just as good. Please send this out to whoever might be interested in designing our t-shirt. There are no age restrictions on this or other requirements. For submission guidelines please contact DEdwards@artshuntsville.org

We are also still taking designs for the Panoply 2009 Poster. The only stipulation is that you had to have been a previous Art Marketplace vendor.

PERSONAL BIO
Samuel William Barnett

Personal:

Samuel William Barnett
2105 Birch Street
Decatur, Alabama 35601
Married to the former Lisa Box of Sheffield.
Two children; William and Leland, both five years old.

Art Related Information:
As long as I can remember, I have had an interest in painting, drawing and making things. My interest and respect for painting increased while attending Auburn University’s College of Architecture and Fine Arts. While studying for a degree in landscape architecture, I utilized watercolor and other media to render various projects and illustrations. Once I began my professional career, I continued to utilize these techniques and became more and more interested in developing my skills as an artist.

The works of American artists such as Howard Pyle, John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer are inspirational to me. I am equally inspired by Dutch painters such as Willem Heda, Johannes Vermeer and Rembrant van Rijn. The work of each of these painters emphasizes the influence and relationship of light and shadow, detail and respect for the subject matter at hand. These aspects of painting are what I strive for in my work.

I consider most of my work to be contemporary realism. My subject matter is usually taken from everyday objects and places that represent a unique point in time. The compositions are intended to tell a story, offer a point of view or describe a personality. Objects and places that evoke memories for me are the most fulfilling paintings to produce. I may find an artifact that reminds me of someone and it will wind up in the painting as a representation of that person. I find great interest in the simple, everyday, and forgotten things in life as well as the things we consider beautiful by their very nature. By composing these elements correctly and the right light, they seem to come alive and possess their own place in time. Occasionally a little humor added to a painting makes it even more personal for the viewer.

Ultimately, I understand that God created everything and that there is beauty in all that He created. My desire is to develop and utilize the skills He gave me to illustrate the hidden beauty of even the most mundane of objects, places or people. Doing so reminds me of who I am here to serve. And hopefully, others will be able to enjoy the work as well.

Artist Bio

Hi! My name is Amy McMullen and I am a Freelance Photographer. I was born December 27th, 1975 in the beautiful state of Alabama, raised in a small town called Harvest. I graduated Sparkman High School at the tender age of 18. I soon became a millitary wife and young mother at the age of 19 while stationed at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, where I lived untill I was 28 years of age. I have always had a camera in hand and my love of photography has always been in my heart. I returned to my sweet home Alabama where my husband of 10 years passed away. My life was changed forever. I have remarried and we have added a beautful third daughter to our family. Where dose photography come in do you ask? After my third child was born, blood clots were to be found in my head, I was to remain in the hospital for three weeks, part of my stay, I was in a "deep sleep " for a week. I almost had a stoke the night I was brought in, to say the least, it was all very scary. After 7 months of treatment, I have recovered and no more blood clots! After such a scare, I have turned my love of taking pictures into my passion... it is a gift that God has given me. I have never had a class, nor have I read about or studied how to edit my work. I have great respect for those who have, I just know, this is my passion, and always has been. I am available for photo shoots. Please visit my website for examples of my Photo Art.

Artist Bio

Math was not my best subject in high school. Working on the yearbook was fun so I decided to major in art in college. I graduated from Athens State University and took a job with Nichols Research as a technical illustrator. Now, about 25 years later, I'm blessed to still be working in Huntsville as a graphic artist for a government contractor.

Between work and a wonderful family, time for painting is limited. I use photographs for reference. They are very convenient. I look at photos in Photoshop, crop them, flip them, adjust the contrast, add to and take away areas to get something that seems like it would make a good painting. I print the final Photoshop product then trace it and project the drawing on to paper or canvas. Someday I would like to work more from life.

Somewhere I saw a book that said to paint what you love. My children have been my primary subjects lately. The goal is to communicate something universal even when I'm describing my family.

Currently, Gary is exhibiting his artwork at the Athens State University Art Alumni Exhibit: "Full Chroma", January 12 through February 6. A reception will be held on January 31 from 1 to 5 pm offering the public an opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists. A wide variety of different artwork styles will be on display. This exhibit is free and open to the public. To find out more about this event please see art blog post: Athens State University will host "Full Chroma" an exhibit of alumni art

Gary is available for commissioned artwork. To contact Gary: garyandson@knology.net or visit his website at: Gary Anderson

Artist Bio

Leslie has been dabbling in art ever since she can remember. She has a bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, but after working for several years in the Space industry, decided to go back and take some art classes. She enrolled in the University of Alabama in Huntsville and studied photography, sculpture and painting. Currently her work varies from mixed media collages to assemblage art to jewelry making. “I feel like I go where the art takes me; and I’m not really sure where I might end up. Also, I love old photos, so a lot of my work uses these wonderful old images.” You can find her work at local shows such as the Monte Sano Art Show and the downtown Sidewalk Arts Strolls. She also sells her work online in her Etsy shop; and she does commissioned work, incorporating personal photographs into collages, dolls, books, etc. Recently she has started teaching classes at the Huntsville Art League.
